'l'he farmers in Custer county
will not be slow in recognizing
in J. O.tl'aylor the republican
candidate fbr sheriff , a man
worthy of their hearty support.

intellect in helping to < 1evelop
the resources of the virgin soil.
lIe has done his share in' trans-

reputation , that may be assailed
by the unprincipled politician ,

of 'cvery republican. For ten

Count ) ' Beacon.
\Ve are again pleased to doff
our hat to our Contemporar.r
across the way. Tht > Beacon is
strictI } " correct in its proposition.
Now if the heayy weight of
the Beacon will read the comparative -
parative statement published in
the RltI'UBI.ICAN last we k he
will find "the volume of the
work rendered by each one and-
the cost to the county measured
by the amount done. "
The Hl\J \ > UBI.ICAN is willing to
stand or fall as the voters of the
count ) ' may elect on that proposition -
tion , but we ca.n not agree with
,
Ithe Beacon that the amount of
fees received is a correct index to
the yolume of business transact-
L ed by the treasurer. 1'0 illustrate -
trate : Mr. George's statement
r , for the half ycar ending June 30 ,
1902 , shows that up to that date
he had collected of the lC)01 tax' '
. the sum of $77,807.2C ) . AU the
1 fees connected with that amount
I of business under George's methods -
ods would be a non-resident fee
of $1.00 011 each receipt to person
residing outside the state and
the commission , but the labor of
entering up and disbursing inter
r the proper funds would be con-
sider'able.
Mr. Schneringer knuws this is
true and so docs the Beacon.
tl'he HltI'UBI.ICAN is not here to
submit to the jugling of figurcs
r in an effort to deceive the honest
11 voter without entering a protest.

tl'he fecs turned back by Mr.
Schneringer the ) ' secm to think
is a matter that can not : be fairly
met.
'l'herc i no record to show
how much Sch leringcr's exccss
fees wcre for the last half of the
rear 1900 , but assuming. that
the , } ' were half of what was reported -
ported for the whole ) 'ear , the ) '
would be S52.24.tfhis a < 1ded
lo $1')81.,8 , the excess cported
for the .rear 1901 is equal to
2507.CJ2 , excess for the year an l
:1 : half.
Let us see where these well
Ilrned fees callie from.
'l'ake the treasurer's fee book
. \1)(1 bcgin.at the page dated Jul ) .
I , 1900 , and run down to date of
Jan. 14 , 1902 , and you will find
that he receivcd for distress warrants -
rants issued , the sum of $585.50.
Whcn you have done tha t , go in-
Lo the Clerl.s oOice and look on
pagc 281 Claims H.egister and
you will find claim No. 100 l-
lowed to M. E. Schneringer in
the sum of $983.50. $585.50 plus
$983.50 equals $1569.00 fees.
L1'or what sen'ice was this $983.50
pai < 1 to Mr. Schneringer out of
the General Fund of the couttt ) . ?
The claim sa's it was for the issuance -
suance of 17 sale certificatcs at
50 cents each. Now the fact of
the business is that these were
sales mad to the county , of
\'arious tracts of land on which
the taxes had not been pai < 1 , in
many instances for ! 'c\'eral years.
In fact it was sales on the poorer
pieces that speculators refused to
purchase.trhe law pro\ides
that the county may assign these
certi licates an < 1 when the assignments -
ments are made the receipts must
be written , one receipt for each
year , there is where the labor -
bor comes. Since land has raise < 1
in price im'estors are purchasing
these certificates.
Schneringer wrote the certificates -
cates and. got the fee off the
county and every taxpayer helped -
ed foot the bill ,
George is writing the receipts
and distributing the funds without -
out any fee.
So you see $15,1) was received
for distress warrants and salc
certificates made to Custer
