'l'he fusion element } Jrc\'ailcd and a ticket of dcmocrats , pops and republicans was the r sult , as can be seen by the ticket as published in another place in this paper. The maiu , question did not seem to be so 111uch whether the candidate - didate was a democrat. Sc\'eralof thedelegates had.personal friends that they wanted to favor and that created morc trouble than did the brand of their politics. For instance Dr. Mullins contended - tended that Dick Miller had a war record and though t he should be endorsed. Eastham contended - ed that as both Richarson and Haney ) as well as Bobli t5 had war records in the Civil War that. the convention had made a good record in remembering those with war records , and as Richarson and Haney were from Virginia none would qu stion Richardson's democracy. . The nomination of Lewis was opposed by some on the theory that he was not a democrat , but the same parties wanted Johnson endorsed notwithstanding he is 'a pop.
