The Custer Baptist Association was beld at Lodi Thursday , Friday - day , aturday and Sunday. In the absence of the Moderator , A. B. Cornish was elected moderator protem. 'rhe Annual Sermon was preached by Rev. W. 1-4. Mark- land , formerly pa1tor ! of the Ans- ley and the .Eudell churches. The election of officers for tbe ensuing year resulted in the election - tion of D. M. Atnf1berry of Broken - ken Bow , moderator ; Mrs. J. H. I Kerr of Anslcy , clerk , A. B. I Cornish of Loeli , treasurer. J. A. Hall of Mason City , was elected chairman of the Missionary - ary committee. The praise service in the evening - ing was led byMrs. J. II. Kerr of Anslcy , and the sermon was preached by Rev. J. Woods of Mason City. Wednesday morning the praise service was led by Bro. Caress of Gandy , after which a sermon preached by Rev. W. T. Powers of Weissert. The report of the missionary committee was made by Rev. 'V. L. Markland which showed upwards - wards of forty accessions as the result of his labors. The afternoon meeting was in charge of the women. The praise service was led by Mrs. Edminsten of Lomax. Report of the Foreign Missionary work in the state by Mrs. Kerr showed a good work and that the churches are alive to that interest. The work in that department in the association was presented by Mrs. A. B. Cornish of Lodi , which showed the churches in Custer Association loyal to the work of Foreign Missions. The work of Home Missions was presented by Mrs. G. W. Runyan and Mrs. Cornish. This report showed that every church in the association was loyal to the Mother Society and that it had been remembered by each in their contributions. This session was one of the interesting features of the Association. The evening session was dev'ot- ed to a discussion of the Sunday School interests , which was followed - lowed with a sermon by Rev. S. P. Morris of Broken Bow. In the forenoon Saturday the Msssionary Union was presented by Rev. Buzzell of Junietta. This was followed by reading the letters of the several churches. The afternoon was taken up with with general discussion and sermon by Rev. Markland. At the evening session praise service was led by Nc George of Cumro. After which a sermon was preached by Rev. F. E. Hudson , Field Secretary of the Grand Island College , at the close of which he presented the interests of tbe college in an able plea for its support. The college - lege interests were discussed by several of the brethcrn and a liberal collection was taken for its support. The services Sunday morning were opened at 6:30 : with devotional - votional services led by Rev. Human , of Lomax. At 11 o'clock a sermon on the "Splritul Significance of Scriptural - tural Baptism" was preached by Rev. S. P. Morris of Broken Bow. Bow.The The afternoon session was devoted - voted to the work of the B. Y. P. U. The praise service was led by Miss Ada l unyan of Mason - son City. A B. Y. P. U. Rally I in charge of Rev. J. R. 'Vood followed which resulted in the organization of a B. Y. P. U'I Association organization. Rev. S. P. Morris was elected president - dent and A. B. Cornish , secre- tary. It was decided to hold a semi-annual meeting of the B. Y. P. U. Association in Broken Bow in April. All the ; evening sessions of the Association were largely attended and all the services were interesting - ing and spiritual. The general opinion expressed was that it was one of the best Associations ever held in the district , The provIsions for entertainment were . . . . . . . - ' ' . . . . . - - - - - - - - . . . . . - . . . . - - - - . . " ' . . . " " , - . . . ' 7 " 7 . ' " , . . . ample and all those in attendance were made to feel a cordial welcome - come by the people of Lodi. The Association will be held next year at Ansley. The date of holding it was. left to the moderator , clerk and a committee consisting of J. A. Hall , Rev. S. C. Cad well and A. B. Cornish. Norwal Schoul llollrd. The Normal School Board arrived - rived in the city Friday morning from the weBt and spent the day in the city viewing the sites for tbe proposed state normal. They were met at the depot by a delegation of citizens with carriages - riages , who proceeded to show them the town and the sites the city would tender the state for normal school purposes. The first site visited was north of the railroad and east of the school house , containing thirty acres. From there the guests were shown the residence portion - tion of the north side. They were theJ,1 driven to the residence portion of the south side , west on Maine street and back on Broadway to the site east of the city. This city of thirty acres was viewed by the board , after which they' wen taken to the Grand Central where they were banqueted. The committee in charge was J : > hn Reese , A. R. Humphrey , F H. Young , J. S. . Mollyneaux , Alpha Morgan , W. A. George and D. M. Amsb.erry. In the afternoon a public meeting - ing was held in the court house where the claims of Broken Bow were presented. The program was opened with a song by the ladies quartette. The quartette was made up of Mesdames Gut- terson , Stuckey , Adamson and 'raylor. .Just prior to calling the 'house to order by Judge Reese a very large and beautiful boq et of flowers was presented to Col. Tom Majors , which called fourJh a happy speach from the recipient - ent , who made much of it at the . . . expense of his colleagues. Several selections were rende.r- ed by the Broken Bow Band while the crowd was gathering. The address of welcome was delivered - livered by Mayor Purcell , who managed in extending a hearty welcome to the distinguished guests , to weave in many suggestions - . gestions and logical reasons why I the proposed normal should be located at Broken Bow. . .rhe address of welcome was responded to by Mr. Rogers of Omaha , president of the board. Mr. Rogers expressed his surprise - prise at the progress : the city had made since his last visit ten years previous and for the hearty reception tendered the board. Chairman Reese then introduce - e . A. R. Humphrey who , in an able manner , presented the advantages - vantages offered by Broken Bow to the state normal. Jas. Whitehead was next introduced - duced , who discussed the moral phaze of the question and showed the possible future of the west that was tributary to Broken Bow. Senator Currie was the ne x t speaker introduced , who in an eloquent mann r showed the great need of the school in Central - tral Nebraska and the. advantages - tages offered by Brokep Bow over all competitors. The members of the Board were each called upon. Each member gave an interestmg talk and spoke of their work and the claims that had been made by the fourteen other towns they had visited. They assured the audience that at no place they had visited had the claims been more ably presented thenat Broken - ken Bow. The mem bers of the committee are : . At the conclusion of the meeting - ing carriages were again pro\'id- ed and the committee took the members of the board oul for a drive in Tappan valley and the Ream \'alley to the northwest , returning in time for supper at the Graud Central. The members - bers of the board left Saturday morning for Lincoln with the view of going to Perue Sunday night where they would hold an executive session Monday and Tuesday , besides making provision - sion for the fall term of the Perue school would determine by ballot the location of the New State Normal. DII n. OSDORNAt the home of his parents in this city , Saturday , August 29th , 19 < > 3 , Charles S. Osborne , of heart trouble ; age 32 years , 4 months and 3 days. The deceased was born in Republic county , Kansas , April 26 , 1871. He movcd "ith his parents to Broken Dow , in May , 1883. About a year after he en. tercd the printers trade as an apprentice un er W. G. Purcell in his job office allli has been engaged in that business 1II0st of the.time since. For years he has been recognized as among the best job printers - ers of thc state. For several years he was in the employ of Purcell Bros. For a time he worked in Idaho for Jah Horn and latcr spent some time in Iowa. lie was foreman of the R PUDlICAN office - fice for 1\\0 , or three years prior to hi ! moving to Sargent where for Ii year he was associated with his wife in running a hotel. From Sargent he moved to RIl- velma , where he again engaged in the hotel business for some time. Frolll there he went to Grand Island where he secured a position in the job department of the Press office of that city. Later he engaged with the Grand Island Imlepen. pent where he held u position in the job department for two years. heing in the employment of that finn when his health compelled him to abandon the office. Some three weeks ago his mother went to Grand Island and brought him home with the view of giving him the best pos. sible care. Yet at that time he was a pretty sick man and there was b t little hopes of his recovery , notwithstanding , he was ble to be out part of the tiule. Only a week before his death he was down town and called Ilt this office. He was a man of fine intellect , faithful and trustworthy , a devoted son , a lo\'iny husband a kind father and a genial friend. He was married August 9 , 1886 , to' Miss Kate Hoagland of this city , whom he leaves and one child , Birdie , a bright little girl ; together with father , mother and several brothers to mourn his early demise. His funeral services were conducted from the home of his parents in this city Tuesday Sept I , at 2 p. m. by Rev. Geo. 'P. ' Trites of the M. E. church , assisted by Rev. Zanders of the Episcopal church of this city of which church the deceased was a member when residing in this city. The attendance was large. The caskett was liberally decorated with flowers , among which was a large wreath sent by the Independent of Gmnd Island. 'I'he pall bearers were selected from his boyhood and young men associates. They were Claude Wahl , N. L. Rt'yn- olds , H. E. Bangs , Fred Hayes , S. F. Clayton and Nine McComas. The Grand Island Indepcmdent in speaking of the death of 1\11' . Osborne says : "The deceased was for a number of years an employe of the Press office later 011 accepting a position in The Indepen- dent's job printing rooms , and retaining the same for the past two years' . He has never in these two years been pyhsically strong and ahout two months ago was compelled to quit work. Dropsey aud heart trou1l1e seemed to be the ailment. "He took a trip to Hot Springs , S.
