Milburn , Neb. , May 27 , 1Y03 , EDIT01 < RItPUBLICAN : Dear Sir-l : wish JOu would publish this letter. This is the story of a mysterious attempt to poison m } ' family. YesterdaJ' forenoon my wifc and I went. down to the river to see about our garden and get some brush. We left Lena at home to get din- ner. Tbe coffee pot was on the stove dnd she beard the dog barking , the way she barks when she finds a snalc. Lena found her back of a small hill out of sight of the house barking at a turtle , and as she started back to the house , she saw a man I standing on the oor Rtcp , and a large dappled grey horse stand- \tlg \ south of the house loose. ' ( I4ena left the door open when she started out. ) When she got to the house she spoke to him. He did 110t answer amI actcd qucer. In a little while he asked if she was Mr. Brownell' ! > girl. She said yes , and he said I thought so , and then he wanted 'to know where Mr. Stallings l1ved and she told him. And thcn he aslcd her if her name was Lena and acted as though he wag acquainted with us. He still appeared queer and spoke tv the horse saying "Well Prince we better go , " and started toward - ward Mr. Stallings. Just after he went away Lena said she cou1 smell carbolic acid , and when I came in to wash for dinner 1 smelt it. I smelt it very strung but could not tell where it came from.Vhen we sat down to dinner my wife and Lena took coffec for dinner < md the little boy and I water. My wife took a swallow of coffee stepped to the door and spit it saying "My God it is in the Coffee. " Then we examined the coffee put ; there was enough carbolic acid in it to have killed everyone of us. My wife rinsed her mouth and throat with mille and cream and drank some , and is alright now except a little soreness in stomach. After dinner we took the coffee pot up to Mr. Stallings for them to ex- amine. They had not seen anyone - one , he had not been there , ' and where he came from or where he went IS all a mystery , and' if he poisoned the coffee it also is a m'stery why he did it. He was a man about my height , medium sizQ , black hair , black eves , black mustache , and very dark complexion - plexion , dressed in navy blue I coat and vest , black pants , blue , I cap. H. M.
