'l'he towns that are putting ! forth an errort to secure the new , normal school are putting in' ' their best licks and the bidding wiH be fast and furious before the matter is setUeel. 'l'he act does not contemplate , however , that the school shal1 be ] mocked down to the highest idder. in cash or real estate , and it is not likely that it will be the policy of the education a ] board to lay too much stress on this side of t he matter to the exc1usion of the higher considerations in\'ov- ] , ed.-Kearney Hub. \Vhi1e Haltings and Aurora seem to have resorted to the bluff game in their etTorts to secure the new State Norma ] , Kearne.r is making a stiH 'hunt ' that its competitors may well haye need to fear. Senator Detrich seems to be the B1uffer from Hastings and State l egent Foel1 for Aurora. As both these towns are favorably accommodated with schools ( If higher education they should not rccei ve serious con. sideration from the Normal chool Board , as long as the entral and Western parts of the state are destitute of higher edu. cational privi1egs. . 'l'he first on the 8th instant , which purported - ported to have been suggested by State Supt. ) ,1"ower ] in which it was suggested that a cash b nus of $25,000 to par : the run- ing' expenses to maintain the school from June 1904 to. . April .1905 would be necess.tr ) . in addition - dition to the twenty acres ofland specified in the bil1. Another article in the same paper on the 13 announced that Aurora had offered $25,000 besides - sides the land an that Hastings , through Senator Detrick had otTered a buildini worth $80,000 in aeldition to some land , Rea- sonl11g from that the paper .re- fered to contended that the question - tion of location is now between Aurora and Hastings. Because of these statements some of our peo- pe ] have expressed a feeling that there is no use for Broken Bow to make further efTort to secure the location of the school. In our opinion those artic1eg in the Star were prompted by some one for a butT ] , with the ohject of dhcouraging the smaller places and docs not represent the opinion - ion of a majority of the Normal School Board , if anyone ofthem. 'rhe bill was passee } especial1y to help the western part of the state , which has not been able to estah1ish col1eges for the education - tion of the rising generations. Supt. Fewer ] was a strong ac1\'o- cate of the bin urging the needs of the west along those lines. We beleive that he was then prompted with an honest desire to help those that were unable to help themselvcs and especially the central and we tern part of , the state that is new when compared - pared with the eastern part of the state. Conditions have not changed since the bil1 was passed - ed , nor do we beleive that Supt. Fowler has hanged his views of the situation. Had it been the primary object of the promoters of the bil1 and the legislature to locate it where the most money could be raised it was a mistake to limit its location west of a point 1ive l11ilt s east of the 98 meridian. 'l'he larger and wea1thier cities are ea t of that line and many of them are able to raise a thousand dollars to an enter prize where the towns in the western part of the state could not give one hundred. 'ro demand now that an amount should be raised sufficient - cient to pay the running expenses - ses of the school a year would defeat the object of the legislature - ture in passing the bin and worJ , a great injusticQ on the western part of the state for which the I school was intended. We feel safe in assuring the citizens of Broken Bow and Custer county that it wiH not he the poi1icy of the locating boarel to locate the school in the town that can or may offer the largest honus. 'l'he board wi ] ] tr ) ' to , follow out the spint of the law in making the location by exer- cising' their best judgement as to where the school when located is the most needed and will serve the best interest of the state. A reasonl\bc ] sum , cotumengur- ate with the financial abi1ity of the people of the community no doubt win be expected as an evidence - dence of loya ] interest to carry ont the spirit of the law which provicles for the board taking in consideration an ) ' bonns that may be tendered in adcli lion to the . twenty acres of land which is specified in the biH. We can assure our people thut there is no nced of feeling dig. couragccl in the matter because of those artic1es in the Star. 'rhe board of Normal Schoob has not authorized uU ) ' sucl1 statement nor will it be influenc. ed by the largest amount offered , unless the school located at thai place would best serve the in. terest of the western part of tht state , If our peoJ ; > le are able to make . , . . . .lo..o. . . . . , . . : . . . . _ _ _ .1.--.1. _ . - - ' - - - - . .
