August E. Hocsslcr was born
in Germany , October Ii , 1872 ,
and died Friday , April 24 , 1903 , ,
being thirty years old. At the
age of nine ycars h camc to
America with his parents , locating -
ing in lndianna. In 1883 , he
camc with his parents to Nebraska -
braska , locating first at Platts-
mouth and removed to Custer I
county in 1890 near Berwyn ,
where he has sincc resided making -
ing his home with 'hisarents. \ .
He had accumulated consIderable
property after rcachinghisIuajor-
1ty. He owned a farm of 160 acres
adjoining his father , clear of in-
curnbernnce , twenty two hend of
cattle , half of twenty fivc brood
sows and necessary farm machinery -
ry to farm his place of which YO
acres arc 1t1 cultivation and five
or six acres in alfalfa , thl hal-
lance being fenced to pasture.
He had some money ; his parents
found two hundred dollars of his
money in the house , vith other
effects but whether it was all he
had no one knows. Some four
years ago he had a spell of sickness -
ness and he was in a worse condition -
dition apparcntly than his late
illness , but the family did not
detect any symptoms of insanity
and his rash' act was a great
shock to his parents and relatives.
Yet since his death they recall
sayltlgs and actions that lead
them to bele1ve he had for some
time premeditated suicide. His
last sIckness dates from last fall ,
but up to within a week or two
before his death he was able to
work. He had gathered nearly
all of his own corn and assisted
in shelling it. Just the day
previous to his death he was out
and looked over every thing
about the place in which he was
interested , closely observing
every thing. 'rhey now construe
his actions to have been giving
a last farewell look , having fully
determined to end his existance.
He had al'ways been a dutiful
son and loving brother , friendly
with his neighbors and had the
respect of all. He leaves to
mourn his untimelydeathfather ,
mother , two brothers , Emil , who
is married and lives near Berwyn
Powell , the ; youngest brother wh (
lives with hIS parents and Mrs
H. F. Grabert.
The funeral was held at the
Berwyn schol house , Sunday 26
at 1 o'clock and was conducte (
by Rev. Bellis. His remain !
were laid to rest in the Janes
ville Cemetery.
