D. 1\1. SA VIr.r.n , Com. HClIlugogry III Politics. 'Ve have been plcased with the disappearance of demagors to a certain extent in Custer count ) " the past few years. 'With the uprising of popism it was the common custom for t hc leaders 0 f that move to advocate all kinds of vageries and practice decep- lion to. influence the unwary. But that cutom has to a great xtent become unpopular and such lactics has not been so frequently resorted to as formerly. But here [ s a reproduction of part of an uticle that appearcd in the uster County Beacon that is Ivcl1 calculated to mis-lead and : anin our opinion be nothing Inore nor less than an intended leception. The Beacon says : "Undcr our prescntmcthod of apport- ionin thc statc school funds cvcry ( lis- trict III Douglas county last ycar rcech'ed from this fund $316,30 more than did thc listriclc ; of Custer couny with a like tlUmbcr of childrcn. 'l'he county superin- lendent on receipt of notifica- lion of t he amount apportioned lo his county procceds to apportion - tion it to the se\'eral district of his county , as the law provides , by first adding to the state fund 1.11 money rece'ed by the county treasurer , of his respective : ountyon account of fines and icenses. Of that amount he : akes one-fourt hand \'ides quall ) ' between the several .lis- ; ricts of thc ' ' county. 'l'he re- naining tojpro rated according .0 enumerntion of the scholars ast returned from the several ' listricts. ' { 'he law males no ex- : : eptions. A school district in . nster county with 30 scholars : ets its pro rate share on the ; ; l1ne basis as a school district in ; ) ouglas count ) ' . Douglas coun- y with its population of 140,590 , ( loubtless receives a much larger 111n fr fines and m licenses , ow- ( ng to the city of Omaha being- , n the county than conn ties with i - smaller ci tics. Bu t if it docs , it nllist be remcmbered that becausc of that large population the burdens - dens are greatcr in porportion. 'l.'he fines and liccnse fund is not created by thc state and rightfully belongs to the locality that produces it. If a district in Douglas county last year re- ceivcd $31.30 more money than a district in Custer county JC- ceived it was nut of statc moncy. We arc nut from1\l ! ; souribut we will have to he shown before we Can accept thc statemcnt of the Beacon that IIUouglas county districts recd ves more money from the state alonc cvcry year than 75 per cent. of the districts of Custer county can possiblY raisc from all sources. " Douglas county can only receivc an amount equal to its school population - lation , the same as Custer , Blaine , Loup , and al1 other counties. It is true Douglas receives - ceives more of the common ; school fund than Custer because of the greater school population. It is also true that Custer receives more money from the state than either Blain or Loup counties for the same reason. 'l'he prctension of the Beacon that Mr. Tooley cou1d have a law passcd compcll- ing Douglas county to share equal with Custer , when she has ten children to one in Custer is nonsense. Such a law would not only be unjust but not within a possibility as the Bcacon editor well knows. Suppose the state moncy was divided cqually among the counties of the state regardless - less of the population , what would McPherson county with her eight school districts and 120 pnpils do with her share of the money ? The contention for such a division is not only preposterous - ous , bnt a down right deccption for the sole purpose of influencing - ing those who do not think for thel11sel Yes. Smne 'nclto Conshlcr. Recently I secured a customer from the northeast part of Nebraska - braska for a ranch. I showed him a ranch in Custer county for $35,000.00j it pleased him \'ery much and \'laS cheap enough. lIe had had $17,000 to invest and could get balance of mone ) ' from a relativc , who told him when he found what he wanted to buy it and he would help him out. So we arranged to cut oIT a part of the ranch and make a sale at S25,000. 'l'he relative came and inspected the land , alid someone , his name was not gi vcn , was kind enoug to tell the relative IIthat tIns was the first crop raised iu Custcr county for ten year. " 'fltis information was the only . cxcuse given bj' our custome.r for not closing a deal. What good our friend has accomplished - plished by his speech I cannot sec. Hc has prevented a good man frqm investing in a safe proposition , and he is not the only one who is always ready to head otT the prospectivc purchas- cr , cspecially the non-resident , from investing. 'l'here are quite a number of thesc interfering people in our vicinity , and it would be at least common sense for them tu attend to their own ' busint > ss and when they do speak to tell the truth. For a few facts , Custer county has only had one failure of crops I in the last ten years , and this is the best crop in ten years. Cus- I ter county has had shortage of crops and what country has 110t ? 'Vas it not dry in Iowa , Illinois , J Indiana , Missouri , and over half the United States last year ? Any good farmer can raise on an : average of 25 bushels of corn per acre for cach year in Custer' county. 25 bushels at 25c , a fair price each year for corn , equals $ ( , .25 , one-third of same rent ! share , $2.08 is 5 per cent. on S41,0-the value of one acre of gootl farm land in Cmtcr count ' . If lantl in Iowa anti Illinois will pay 5 per cent. interest on the investment , it is a gootl invest- ment. Why is 1t not in Nebraska ? One farmer in Custcr county has raisetl for the last tcn years : m average of 20 bushcls winh wheat per acre , at 40c per bushel , : l low estimate , gives $8.09 per lcre , one-thinl rcnt share is $2.6 ( , Jr 5 pr cent. on $53.20'alue per lcre. I was told one real estate agent Jf Brol\Cn Bow called on a farm- r not long since with a laud juyer anti thc farmer was tnnd mough to remark "that this , vas the first crop he had raised n ten ) 'ears. " ' 1'h is was a colder I deck than any olle ever sprang on me , if you know what that is I have never cxu ined Webster on thc subject , but my idea ; 8 from the expression of the fcat- ure of a card playcf whcn hc spl'a1cs of a cold deck. 'l'hc party who interfercd in m ) ' ale c\'itlent1y did not intcnd to injure mc , for I hardly thInk hc could havc known I was in- tercsted in the sale. But , ne\'cr- thclcss , it is about timc that such people learn to Ieccp their mouths shut , and let people who wish to sell and ha'c good rca- sons for selling , make their own bargains. l 'or I tcll you the one who sells now at present prices will bc the looser instead of the purchaser. Pcrsonally I have securcd enough land in Custcr I county to bring me a good income - ' come whether I lease it or work it myself , anti I am not worricd about loosing a commission now and then , but it is time those old mossbacks who are jealous of anyonc else making a dotlar should either die or hold their peace. Heretofore land in Cus- tcr county has sold , lt your own price and I ha\'c been glad to see those who llave laboretl through the hard timcs get a new foot hold , and it is with no little satisfaction - isfaction that I have turned over many \ ) . good bargain to a neighbor - bor , and it is time. now for the disgrunted and selfish fellow to get out of the way. Priccs are going up and will be 50 per cent. in advance of prescnt prices before - : . fore another crop is plantcd. 'fhe curse of this county is poor ' farmers. 'We want good farmers who will work a reasonable number - ber of acres and do it good , and not scratch over 300 or 400 acrcs. 'l'hat kind of farming breaks up the farmer and they curse the country. 'fo illustrate , I ha\'e one tenant who farms 100 acres , big farmers around him cultivate 300 or morc acres , and my tenant said he had more corn last year than all the balance of his town- ship. He is an old man and his neighbors admit he was not far from the truth. I hope we will not have to write anj'thing further about the common practice of people chipping - ping into the real estate business. I may ' write something lateron the 'value of lands in Custer county from a dairyman's stanc1- point. Yours Respt. , 'VII.LIS CADWHr.r. . Fries Nomin ted.
