' 1\hc boys went for fun , and T
wcnt to study the geology of thc
island. 1 had noticed that thc
earthqual { ( ' nlO'elllcllts'l'n' a
series of spcming pushes from
the north , alld hence assullled it
to IH' possible that the island is
slowly sinking on the south atlll
rising" on thc north. .Just across
the island frolll Agana is the site
of an old town IIamed Pago. on
the I'ag-o ri\'cl' . 'I'his town has
hecn abandoned , and the ca USL'
is very e\'ident , for tlw low land
upon which it was huilt is II W
so ncar thc occan Ic\'el , that it is
subjed to tidal illtHlndations.
' ( 'h ( ' lIIouth of th ( ' Pag-o r'l'r is
\'cry decp , and nearly lifty yards
wide. 'I'hcre is an ahsence of
prccipitous headlands , anll watcr

the IIol'th all thc ri\'crs arc shallow -
low and pour into thc ocean with
rapid current , and high cscap-
mcn ts and ca'crns arc common.
It call hardly be doubted that a
slow sinking- thc south and
rising on the north of this island
is going on. In conformity with
the gencral rnle , howe\'er , thc
whole island is slowly suhsiding ,
along with all Islands of the
Pacific ocean in this latitude.
' { 'hcre are many reasons to be-
licve that the northeastern sptir
of this island was forlllcd a long
time beforc the southcrn or main
part. li'rolll Agana to Page is a
kind of islanl hasin , hetwccn the

'l'he highest mountain is l\lt.

thc ruggcd contour of the newer
and southern mountains. ' .1'hc ,
larg"e trees arc nearly all 011 the I
northeastern spur , while a largc
portion of the southcrn part is
rough prairie , with somc uf thc
highest. pcaks entirely bare. I
am certain if a level were placed
upon our oldest bu itd i ng-thc
Catholic church-it would , show
that the south end is thc lower.
Our trip to Pag'o was very tiresome -
some , yct quite intercsting.
Most of the way is along an old
road to Page , but which now is
m'rely a Carahao trail. It goes
through bamboo thickets and
jungle so dense that it sccmcd
\'ry like a tunnel through
verdure.Vhcn thirsty , our

drop four or ti\'c nuts , which we
opencd with a machete. A
cocoa nut holds from two to

i very palatable-to those who
likc it. 'I\hcre arc wagon loads
