It is thought these 1I1aterial1l1cans that they must" now be traincd . to understand . the worlds faith anel thrift. It would he cruel to these hcople to blind thcm with prejmlice of creeds before they had opened their eyes to the substance of moral life. My faith in our Natioual history in the Orient , makes me anxious to see a nation of political and religious liberty pllsh its broad faith in man and God into the constructive forces which witI build hcre a new world's empire. ' 1'0 do this , re- ( } uires more that natural enginery. It rcquires men who will dcdicate the material forces to a new birth of moral and in ustrial life. What we nced arc men of deed and not of wor s , men of practical lives nnd not a mere profession , an all incidental needs can be supplied b ) ' local talcnt. If christianity expects to do good to these oriental people it must go into business with them before a soulless and selfish industrial power has practically destroyed their op- portunities. They must bc given industrial equality or perish. If they do not get this it will not be the fault of st tesman or politics , but 1-he fault those who pose as moral guides hut will not take hold of the fUl'ces which direct affairs. Around the orient is centering an industrial empire of world wide influence. It will begin stronger in means aud experience than was ever possiblc to any present nation. 'l'he ninctecn christian centuries havc witnessed no opportunity so potent for good. In. the con struction of this empire evcry I moral institution should be rep- resentated with means and mcn resolved t dedicate it to freedom and righteousness. H. H. HIAT'I' . Agana , Island of Guam , March 29 , 1902.-Rl\l'unrIc N-Many : ycars ago , a man brought from the Hawaiian islands , a boat load of the native , called Kan- aIm , to work on these south sea islands. A settlement of Kan- akas was made here , and the ) ' were constantly in trouble with the Chamorro. 'rhe ) ' bad the Chamorro terrified so badly that they were afraid to go out at night. 1\lan : ) ' stories of ghosts and f arful sights arc still cur- rent. 'l'he many sheds or shrines which arc on every rOi d have a very conflicting historr. Some say they mark spots where some Chamorro was accidcntly ldlled , while others say they were built , when the Kanakas were here as a leind of refuge from spools. 'Vhen anyone was pursued b ) ' a ghost , he ran to the shrine and sat under the cross by a t.n er which is always burning at night. No spook ever comes 1 to a shrine , hecause it is a holy place. Judging from stories , the Kanalms had a great dcal of sport scaring the superstitious - stitious Chamorros , for they still say great balls of WIIITH would 1'011 down hilts aftcr them , and tall ghosts of white would chase , - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - . - - - - . So intense luul the hatred h < . : twcen Chamorro and Kanaka becomc that Governor Leary had the Kanalms all sent away. The story goes that many years ago a 'priest ' convertcd a Kanalm ho ) ' and made him good. ' 1'lie poor wounded priest found no sympathy with the wicled Kanaka ! : ! , so he wcnt to the ocean and took ofT his hat anll put up his'coat upon it for a sail. In this hat he set sail for his home in Spain. Whcn .h reached Spain he found his old father and brother mlecp ; ; so he lay down with them , and together - gether they all died. The jury has been inclined - ed to hang out so long on each case that has been submitted to them for consideration , that it has bccn difficult for the court to keep up1lis usual speed. The case of the state against Chris Burhop of Roten Valley , whic11 we reported last week in prog-ress , went to the jury Thins- day evening about 5 o'clock.
