Some of the re sults are reported on as follows : The average of several years' results from needing at different dates shows that the grain \vhioh was sown on or before the ninth of September gave a coDbUlerably larger yiuhl of bolh slraw ( mil grain than that which was sown ftir that date. The very best yields were obtained- from the wheat which waa sown lu the last week of August. An experiment with ditt'eicnt prep arations of winter wlioat land has been conducted lu duplicate In each oC four yeaia. The average results In bushels of grain PIT ai re of the eight tests are as foil > \\r Twenty tons of farm-yard ui nuic per acre on bare summer fa'low10 U ; crop ot peak j plowed under , 36.1 ; bare summer fallow - | low , 33.S ; crop of' buckwheat plowed under , L" ) G. These u suits show that peas pi\e much Letter rcsulta than buckwheat when used as a green ma nure on laud to be used for winter wheat. lu an experiment conducted during the past year in growing wheat on grass sod and on clover sod it was found that the former gave 28.2 per cent less in yield of grain per aero than the latter. Ten plots were used for the experiment. The crop of both , grass and clover was removed from the land In 1890 , after which the l.ind wai plowed and the wheat was town dur ing the first weelc of September. The experiment will likely bo repeated for several years. In each of six years an experiment has been conducted In duplicate by powlng winter wheat broadcast and with a drill. Thu results from sowlnc the same quantities of seed by the two methods are very similar , the yieluu jer acre being practically equal. It should be understood that the land was in a good state of cultivation whea the seeding took place , In every case. In order to find out the lulluencu ot cutting wheat at different stages of maturity upou the quality of the grainer ( or seed purposes , Bam pics were taken from the crop cut at different dates , Mid these oamplos were ca.'efully aow upon separata plot" . In the average results ot these teats made vlth two varieties in each ot live years , It wa found that the heaviest weight of grain par measured bushel , and the largest yield of grain and straw pur act\J , were produced from seed taken from the crop which had been allowed to become very ripe before It waa cut . .UtAJJ. - u. ' llllnoU D.ur. MutKiiM. ( From Farmers' K'\low ' stenograph ic report of the lllinolh Stnto Dairy- men's convention. ) J. II. Motirad , dairy expert of the Illinois pure food commission , said , lu part : "Creamery men do not scorn to un derstand the vuluo of ventilation so as to dry up quickly the lloors , the coil- Ingn and utensils' . Nor do they al- wnyn value light enough , forgetting that light not only kills undesirable spores , but enables thu butter-maker to BOO the dirt. Nor do they seem to value paint enough , forgetting the moral effect of a neat appearing cream- cry inside and out , not only on the butter-maker , but also on the patrona. "Milk producers do not seem to un derstand the value of stable ventila tion , drainage , light and whitewash , carding and brushing the cows and aerating the milk. Even the need ot cooling and thorough cleanliness Is hardly understood , and the consequence quence Is that they t'aslly succumb to the arguments of the slick-talking tigcntH of propervatlveii and are Induced to use them aa a remedy for neglect of cleanliness , and are thus led to bo accesoorlee before the fact t * child murder. While the state food commls- alon disapproves of the use of preserv atives ( other than salt , vinegar and alcohol ) , it is especially down on their use In milk and cream used BO much by Infants and Invalids. "As to the Btfcto food law and Its en forcement. While a great deal has been done In tho'way of enforcing the use of more honest labels , 1 regret to gay that In many ways the law has been Ineffective and will remain In effective until it its modified. "Wo must have the hearty support and co-operation of the public-spirited citizens who will not grudge a little time aud trouble. Let mo illustrate. One of our Inspectors , a citizen ot Au rora , got on the track ot a most glar ing s.nd audacloua fraud perpetrated right here. An agent , it seems , went around and took orders for line cream ery butter at a low price 'because he had an undo la the business. ' The stuff delivered by another man , turned out to he oleomargarine , without sten cil , without stamp. The seller violated not only the state law , but also the. federal law , yet , when our inspector tried to get private citizens to help him prove the case , no ono would vol unteer. "Nor Is it only by helping us In g.et- tlng evidence that the citizens should protect theinBftl-'cs , but also by payIng - Ing reasonable ttion to market val * uea. If , for InsUtco , they wore to notice the wholesale price of extra but ter to bo 24 cents , they may reasonably expect to bo defrauded If anyone ofiers It retail at lesa than 27 to I0 ! cents. In transmitting to the department a translation of the now rules and reg ulations governing the Inspection and trade in milk , as adopted by tlio city council in Leipzig , Consul Warner , un der date of July 21 , 1900 , reports that tlio old regulations wore abolished at the instance of the advisory board of the Saxon agricultural department lor the reason , chietly , that their rcqulie- inent of 3 per cent of fat In the milk could not always , oven with the btot intentions on the part ot the larmeis , be pom piled with. Th present rcgti lations i educe the fat requirement in the milk from U per cent to 2.7 per cent. The new standard of 2.7 pnr ce-nt ol fat In milk is the prevailing ono throughout Saxony. Of ninety-live cities r.nd towns , only tifty-nine con tain any articles lu their regulations concerning the lowest allowable pcr- cntago of fat.
