Now for the plain truth about
the commuiueship. The iiiHt 1
know lliiit tluto * an likely to be a
vacancy in our" township , Mr. Mor
gan came over to my placn about
the 15lh of August , ilo drove up
to my millet patch where I was
cutting wccdti. Ho staled that ho
had rocoivuM a telephone rn * > snago
from iMr. Seville hinting that no
going away on a visit to bo
/ , gone the greater part of the cam
' paign , ami thought U wouid bo nec-
ocs-iary for him 10 resign , and that
ho had n > ( omniended me 10 lil ! the
vacancy Mr Morgan further stated
that ho had como ever for the pur
pose of bringing mo a pml bojk
and appointing mo ah uoinmittee-
mon. I expr ii8ed to Mr. Morgan
my thanks both to hiiuHclf-and Mr.
Savillu for their good will , but that
i was getting old and ha J retired
from aottvo political life , and had
no desiro.to re-enter iho work , con
sequently I would have to decline
to serve , and stated that 1 did % not
think it would ho necessary for Mr.
Savillo to roMfj'i n there was plenty
of good ri > ubiicans hoie who
would "look after any of the details
of the campaign during his absence.
It was about noon airl I invited Mr.
Morgan to stop and food his horses
and take dinner which ho ncccoptcd.
Up to last full there has been
existing in this township for a
period of four years a factional
differento' Mr Savillo and myoi'lf
were in opprniic factions. Last fall
by a mutualuonft'icni'o 6f republi
cans I am happy to state these
differences were peacefully adjunt-
- ed , all pledging themselves to let
1 the past be forgotten and to work
togc'thcr for the g ol of iho party
and community. Aflor dinner i
fully explained this to Mr , Morgan
and expressed ths fear that if 1
flatlv rnftisod to aorvo without see
ing Mr Savillo nud explaining my
position , ho fuif H consider that I
was not treating him with courtesy
and wished to k 'l'p open the old
faction ligh't. Mr. Morgan ex
pressed the ot'iniou ' that I ought
to by all means servo until
I could see Mr. Saville , and if thin
could not bo done until his return
from his vinil , that I should servo
during the interim. I succeeded in
catchiim Mr. Saville b'fore ho left ,
explained my position and declined
to servo permanently , but that I
would look after any' details that
might need attention during his
abbonrc , with this understanding ho
said h would not resign and ]
lonnally noiili. , | Mr. Morgan in
my biiltr i.f the 18th that Mr.
i > avi to I.ml ngrtcd to servo and
thbt 1 ( Iri-lmiil to Nerve , also stat
ing that 1 would servo the party
iinoOicially in anyway I could dnr.
irir Mr S-ivilV ibs.'inu. Nnsv Mr

all this before lie vent a aj' , which
was prior to the forwarding of his
famous petition and the publication
of bis two populiatiu manifestos ,
a d it was entirely unnuccHsary for
him to nurse a grievance "and he
only done so in order to gratify his
inherent cuseedness , which is a
part of IIH nature.
And now I wish to say over my
own signature , that bo did not toll
thn truth when ho says bis petition
was signed by every republican to
whom presented. Ho does not state
as , a truth tuat some who signed
ordered their names removed before
it left his hands , which ho did not
do. lie belied the facts in the
statements ho made to those who
did sign , as I have boon informed
by a number of them who have
come ( o mo and volunteoroJ to sign
i retraction. And 1 do not believe
for a moment that there was anyone
who w.ould have signed his petition
except himself and brother bad they
known the facts. Ho further
publisher himaelf a vorycheap pnr >
vencator of truth whonho tries to in
sinuate that I am not a republican.
From Lincoln to MoKinloy I have
voted a straight republican ticket in
national and state politics. On a
very few and rare occasions I have
cast my vote for what I believed to
bo a better man on a local opposi
tion ticket. Who has not ? I have
never tj.reatened to put the whole
republican ticket it/ the sack. Come
Doctor , do you think you are the
only pebble on the beach , and that
the old republican ship will sink if
you drop out in the mud. He g3od
ind tdl us what votes you have
locked up in your vest pcaket with
which you intend to stone the good
old vessel , if you or Craig are not
HI ado cotnmitteomnn or something
olso.You'novor have done anything
for the party and your friendly
visits to the poor people costs them
two dollars a mile. And now if any
one wants any further explanation
ol the very few days I acted for Mr.
Savilln , I refer them to him or
Chairman Morgan who knows I
have stated the absolute truth.
