"What a hard , narrow , revengeful , sul len woman ! Poor Harvey ! I hope hu may continue blind to the end. It is his only chance for happiness. " She need not have been concerned for Huivcy. Already Helen , her arms about his neck , her voice broken with emotion , was making her cause good ; and although he could not see exactly wncre uiadys Had erred , lie was soon convinced that his wife had been wan- ; only insulted , and was grievously bust In consequence. Nothing could have been further from the truth than either conviction ; but gazing Into so- ductlvo eyes , tear drenched , pressing warm , red lips quivering with sobs , few men are wlso enough to discrim inate between the chastening dews of sorrow and the bitter waters of Bplto or envy. Gladys. ' dinner was a success. She felt Helen's absence to bo a relief. It seemed pleasant to have the house to heisclf again , and to sit at the head of her own table. She threw off her sadness and became the charming , frivolous Gladys every one potted and loved. Her guests lingeied late. Long after Harvey and Helen had retired the sound of their voices rang through the houbo , and Helen complained next day at breakfast that baby was fretful and unwell , having boon robbed of bis olccp the night previous. Mrs , Atborton made no answer to this plaint. She had discovered that Haivoy's geniality had vanished , and his manner toward her was cold. " ( To be continued. ) THE HAIR HARVEST. it , OOO.OOO 1'oundt of Hanuin Hair Perhaps there is no staple article- about which less is known by the av- crge person than human hair as an V article of commerce. It will doubtless. ' surprise many when it is stated that the dealers in human hair goods do not depend on chance clippings here and there , but that there is a regular hair harvest that can always be relied upon. It Is estimated that over 12- 000,000 pounds of human hair are used annually in the civilized wprld for adorning the heads of women , says a writer in the Toledo Courier. Two- thirds of the ladies nowadays use false hair , more or less. The decree of fashion or the desire to conceal a de- feet or heighten a charm is the reason , of course. One woman , for Instance , las a high forehead and wishes to re- luce It in appearance. Another has vorn off the front hair by continued rlzzing , and would like to conceal the fact. Both make use of front or top piece , with a choice of many styles. Ladles' wigs cost from $20 to $100. : Ialf wigs , top pieces and switches , from $5 to $50 , according to quality. The rarest supply of hair comes 'rom ' Switzerland , Germany and the French provinces. There is a human mlr market in Merlans , In the depart ment of the lower Pyrenees , held ev ery Friday. Hundreds of hair tradern walk up and down the one street oi . .hoillage , their sheais dangling ! rom their belts , and Inspect the > ralds which the peasant girls , standIng - Ing on the steps of the houses , let clown for inspection. If a bargain is struck the hair is cut and the money paid on the spot , the price varying fiom fifty cents to $5 In our money. J Our Sun n Ihlrd-Il.Un On p. Our sun Is a third-rate sun , situated in the milky way , one of myriads of stars , and the milky way is Itself one of myriads of sectional star accumu lations , for these seem to be count less , and to bo spread over infinity. At some period of their existence each of these suns had planets circling nround it , which , after untold ages , are fit for some sort of human beings to Inhabit them for a compartlvely brief period , after which they still continue for years to circle around without atmos phere , vegetation or Inhabitants , as the moon does around our planet. There is nothing so calculated to take the conceit out of an individual who thinks himself an Important unit in the universe as astronomy. U teaches that we are less , compared with the universe , than a colony of ants is to us , and that the diffoienio between men is leas than that between one ant and another. London Truth. "But the world never forgives , " oh- serves one ot the characters In a pop. ular novel , "It Is only God and GUI mothcra that can do that. "
