Kcvlow March 25 , 1900.
UOI.DKN TIXT "The Sou of man cauiu uot to bo
inlnlslcrod unto , but to mlulttor. "
I. Luko. 2:1-10. The Birth of
Jesus. This lesson ushers in a now
heaven and n new earth. The birth
of Jcsua is the turning point of the
whole history of mankind. Whou
the fulness of time came the Virgin
brought forth hot first born sou
the Sou of the Highest. The story
of this lesson brings to mind IIor-
od's decree , the Journey of Joseph
and Mary to Bethlehem , the birth
of the Lord in ft stable. The au-
gels made glad the midnight with
their beautiful songs nnd their mes
sage to the shepherds. The lesson
oloscs with the visit of the shop *
herds to the stable whore they find
the child in a mincer.
II. The child JCHIIS visits Jeru
salem. Luke 2:41-52 : Wo would
like to know more of the boyhood
of Jesus but it seems that this
knowledge is providentially hidden
from us One im ident , is all we
know of the youth of Jesus ; and it
is nub aud beautiful m its devotion
and innocence. Ho was a true boy
and at twelve years of age when he
became a son of the congregation ,
went to Jerusalem with his parents ,
Hi3 parents start for homo after the
passovor. without Jesus. When
they discover bin absence they turn
back seeking him Aiid after three
days iind him in the temple sitting
in the midst of the doctors. His
heart was taken up with the pleas
ure of being iu his Father's houeo.
III. Thu PreaobiHK of Jobn the
Bapt st Luke 3:1-17 This 1ft-
8ou gives tbe account of a great re
vival of religion produced by thu
preaching of another Elijah. The
Baptist was a strong , fearless , strik
ing character , \\lio had a mt'SHage
to deliver. His fury words mad'
people tremble. lie drew crowds
to his preaching along the Jordan
river ; he offended many , pleased
others but hammered away with
blows that caused Pharisees , sold
iers and other sinners to ask him
what they mubt do to bo saved
People thought John the BaptiHt
was the Messiah but he * aid that he
was only a voice.
IV. The Baptiftt and Tempta
tion of Jesus. Matt. 3:13 to 4:11.
Among the multitude who came to
John to be baptized was Jesus. It
was an example of fulfilling all
rigliteoiHiiet-H to bo thus baptized
by John , so Jesuti was baptized , AH
he Gime up out of the water , the
heavens opined , the Spirit as a
dove came upon JCSUD , while a
voice spoke out of heaven , this is
my beloved aou in whom I am well
pleased. After thia Jesus was led
away into the wilderness where oc
curred that series of memorable
battles. He ate nothing for forty
days , tempted constantly ; then
uame the final onslaught of all tbe
jiOA'ers of Satan in three tempta
tions. But Jesus refueied to obey
aud uped the word of God to de
feat Satan by saying , it is written ,

VII. Jesus at Jacob's Well.
John 4:15-20 : , A good ICHSOII for
thirsty souls. Passing through
Samaria , Jesus about noon domes to.
Sychar ; while his disciples go into
the town to buy bread , he rests by
thu well. Sitting ou the curb of
the well ho is visited by it woman
who comes to draw water. The
woman is of doubtful character and
on being asked for A drink she is
astonished that a Jew would ask of
her a drink. Then takes place the
Lord's teaching on the water of
life. After some objections ou the
woman's part , she accepts this wa
ter of life and tolls the men of the
oity that she has found the Messiah.
VIII. Jesus Rejected at Naza
reth. Luke 4:10-30. : Jesus IP
again in Galilee. Nazareth his old
home is honored with a visit from
him who is now called the Messiah.
Nazareth with its familiar places
aud faces was just the place for him
to spend a Sabbath day. At the
hour of service ho entered the syn
agogue nnd on being invited to
preach he used as his text the Mes
sianic message from Isaiah , . On
referring to hiidHolf as the one
meant in this passage hid old neigh
bors rejected him and cast him out
of. their oity. It was not a pleas
ant reception. Ho must have felt
hurt at Mich uncalled for treatment.
He however did not resent it but
wont his way sorry for their unbe
lief.

IX. Jeans Healing iu Caper
naum. Mark , 1:21-34. Again on
the Sabbath he enters the Syna
gogue , but in another city. He has
now moved his home to Capernaum ,
lie taught in tbo Synagogue. The
church is always a p'aco ' of instruo
lion. While Jesus preached a loud
cry of one possessed with a devil
interrupted the aervioo. Jesus
healed the man ; then went into
Peters' house where ho healed the
mother in-law of Peter of fever.
That Sabbath evening many sick
were abnut his door to bo healed
and he healed all.
X. The Paralytic Healed. Mai. .
2:1-12 It is in the muno oity of
Capernaum. Jesus was in a house
teaching , the crowd thronged him ,
the door is choked , a paralytic ,
burtif of four seeks entrance but
tbe crowd refuses then the roof is
torn up and thf sick man laid be
fore Jesus. The sick man has his
hint ) forgiven ; then is cured of his
sickness.
XI. Jesus at Matthew's house.
Mark 2:13-22 , The Publican Levi
Matthew is called to follow. Ho
follows and makes a feast for Jesus.
The Pharisees are horrified at Jesus
aHsooiating with publicans and sin
ners. Jesus answers that he came
for the purpose of winning public
ans and sinners. Jesus further
Hhowd tbpse critical Jevrs that he
now gives a religion that ifree
and without any old dogmas hold
ing it back. Ho thus shook hia
kingdom free from the old ideas
that bound the Jew. Wo have now
ended a quarter s lessens on tbo lite
of our Lord. We hope they have
been as interesting to others at * they
hav lo the writer. May the next
quarter be still more interesting.
