Cures Colds
Neglected colds always lead
to something serious. They
run into chronic bronchitis v/hich
pulls down your general health
nnd deprives you of sleep : or
they end in genuine consump
tion with all its uncertain results.
Don't v/ait , but take Aycr's
Cherry Pectoral just as soon as
you begin to cough. A few
doses will cure you then. But
it cures old colds , too , only it
takes a little more time. We
refer to such diseases as bron
chitis , asthma , whooping-cough ,
consumption , and hard winter
coughs.
If JOU'NO just taken cold a 25 cent bottle -
tlo is all you'll need. For harder cases a
CO cent uottlo is better. For chronic p
troubles , nnd to keep on hand , the $1.00
bottle is most economical.

TEXAS TEnnOR OF COWBOY
DAYS.
Iftcr n NlRlit of Itovolry Ho fell , Shot
In u Flcht AVI til Ono of Ills Com-
imnlons Wai On mo to tliu List ami
Dliul with II11 Hoots On.
Ono of the typical terrorn of Texas
wns Juhnnlo Potts. When hla uystem
was not filled with the peculiar and
lialr-ralslng beverage sold for whisky
In the border towns , Potta was rea
sonably peaceful , though never socia
ble In his disposition , but v/hen he
was loaded with what was commonly
termed "old hell's delight" ho was ono
of the most dangerous of his class.
It was In the early puit of March ,
1881 , that Ben Franklin and others or
the cowboys of the "T G" range went
to Caldwcll to take in the town. All
the riders could not bo spared at once ,
and for that reason Jolmnlo Potts and
others had to stay at camp. Franklin ,
who In cowboy circles was considered
a more than ordinary big-hearted and
jovial spirit , showed hit ) sympathy for
his unfortunate companions who did
not have- the opportunity to participate
In the pastime .of painting the town
red , by bringing back to camp .1 jug
of the liquor dealt out at Caldwell
saloons. The night at the ranch was
one of revelry , gambling and drinking.
Potts drank heavily and as the hourd
woreon ho became more noluy and
quarrelsome. It was nearly morning
when he arose from the camp table ,
and , staggering against the desk of the
bookkeeper of the cattle company ,
upset the ink and disarranged the pa
pers. The bookkeeper made some
protest , which , with Johnnie Potts.was
the signal for trouble. Pulling his slx-
shooter.ho proceeded to kick over such
furniture as there was about the camp
house as a sort of preliminary to gen
eral hostilities. The other range riders
were not so full of red liquor that they
did not realize that it was only a
question how many would bo able to
get out of ranjje when Johnnie began
to shoot.
Franklin , who was quicker to think
and act than his companions , with a
swift movement caught the "terror"
from behind and throwing him to the
Hoer disarmed him. Johnnie raved like
a madman and applied to Franklin all
the epithets known to the cowboy ver
nacular until he had worn hhn&elf out
and sank into a drunken slumber. The
next morning Bon Franklin concluded
that as a representative of the great
state of Texas he should demand an
apology from the "terror" for his con
duct of the previous night. With most
members of the cowboy class this re
quest would have been complied with
as a matter of course , but Johnnie
Potts had the opinion that it was be-
ineath the dignity of a real "terror" to
apologize for anything and would not.
Ben Franklin , on the other hand , al
though an unusually good-natured
member of the fraternity , felt that
when a Texan demanded an apology It
must como or blood. The range rid
ers stood close together , there was no
consultation of "seconds" or measur
ing off so many paces. There were
three sharp , loud reports , the flashes
and smoke of the "forty-fours" and
the thing was ovor. Franklin was
quicker by the fraction of a second ,
and Johnnie's pistol arm was shat
tered before he could pull the trigger.
The ball from his revolver went wild
and the second ball from Ben's gun
plowed through Johnnie's vitals. Then
a curious thing happened which
showed the Texas chivalry of Johnnie
Potts , the "terror. " Franklin , filled
with remorse , now that the shooting
was over , wanted to hunt up a United
States deputy marshal and surrender
himself Into the hands of the law , but
the "terror , " though writhing In hla
death agony , would not hear of It.
"What's the use o' doin' that , Ben ? "
gasped the dying "terror. " "Yer got
me , but I'd sure a got yon If I'd a
drawed a little quicker. 'Twon't do me
no sort o' good fur you to go anil
stand trial , nur yon cither. The "ter
ror" was burled near the lonely camp
house , and the foreman of the ranch
took the trouble to see that the grave
was not entirely neglected. Ben Frank
lin went back to his home a clMingec
man. Instead of the rollicking rougb
rider ho became gloomy , haggard , and
prematurely old * with the haunted
look of a man who ever saw the pic
ture of a night's debauch , a fatal due )
and the lonesome , unmarked grave o >

A curious circumstance concerning
the body of Admiral Spotts has boon
reported from the Falkland Islands ,
where ho died 17 years ago. The Falk
land physician who attended him dur
ing his fatal Illness was present at the
exhumation of the body when the
cruiser Badger was sent for It last
year. The coflln had disappeared , but
the corpse was absolutely unchanged ,
oven the features having retained the
exact appearance that they presented
on the day of death. This wonderful
preservation was due to the action ot
the peat water which saturates the
Islands. It had embalmed the body
completely.

might bo both useful and Interesting
to my fellow-countrymen In the United
States who may be looking to Mani
toba and the northwest with the In
tention of settling there , I have much
pleasure In stating that through In
formation received from Mr. W. F.
MeCrenry , Immigration commissioner
at Winnipeg , I was Induced to visit
Manitoba In February , 1S9S. When I
called upon Mr. McCicary ho spared no
pains to give mo all the Information ,
ttc. , In his possession , the result of
which was that I came hero \rlth a
letter of introduction from him to the
sccietary of tlio Vlrden Board of
Trade. That guntlcuinn provided mo
with a competent land guide , nnd ,
although there wns considerable snow
on the { .iiiiint ! , 1 had no dllllculty In
selecting three honifstcads for myself
and sons. Having made the necessary
homestead entries at the land olllco In
Brandon , I returned to my homo In
Lyon countyMlnnceotnand came back
here in May following , accompanied
by ono of my boys , bringing with ns
two teams of hors.es , implements , etc.
Our first work was to erect a temp i-
rary shanty and stable , after which
wo broke nnd leveled seventy-five-
acics and put up thirty tbna of hay.
I went back to MlnnuooUx about July
20 , leaving my eon hero. I returned
In October , bringing my family with
me. I found that the land wo had
acquired was of good quality , bolng
n strong clay loam with clay subsoil.
Last spring I sowed 100 acres In wheat
nnd fifty acres In oats and barley.
( Se\cnty-fhe acres of this grain was
cowed on "go-back" plowed last
spiing. ) My crop was thrashed in
October , the result being ever 2,700
bushels of grain in all. Wheat aver
aged fifteen bushels par aero nnd
graded No. 1 hard , but that which was
sown on land other than sod ( "go-
back" ) went twenty four nnd one-half
bushels per acre.
To say that I am well pleased with
the result of my first year's farming
opeiatlons in Manitoba docs not ade
quately express my feallngs , and I
have no hesitation in advising those
who arc living in districts where land
is high in price to come out hero , If
they are willing to do a fair amount
of work. I am ten miles from Virdcn ,
which is a good market town , and nine
miles from llargravc , where there are
two elevators. This summer I erected
a duelling house of native stone and
bought a half-section of land adjoin
ing our homesteads , for which I paid
n very moderate price. There are still
some homesteads in this district , nnd
land of fine quality can bo purchased
from the Canadian Pacific Railway
company at $3.50 per acre on liberal
terms. Good water Is generally found
at a depth of from fifteen to twenty
feet. I have 175 acres ready for crop
next year.
The cost of living here Is about the
Bruno as in southern Minnesota. Some
commodities arc higher and others
lower In price , but the average is
about ( he same. I remain , your obe
dient servant. ( Signed. )
