Landowners From
Lincoln and Omaha
Forestall Reserve
Two large landowners in the
DeSoto Bend area have moved ;
this week to forestall an effort j
to wrest their land from them for
use as a Federal Game reserve.
They have offered to turn over j
their ground to he used as a game j
sanctuary provided the other ef-j
forts, be dropped.
Pace Woods and Henry Me- j
Campbell, who own the bulk of ;
the land in the Bend area, claim
that the 5000 acres which their
holdings embrace, would make an
excellent Game Sanctuary. They
offered the ground to the State
Game Commission late last week.
Mr. Woods, in conversation
with The Enterpprise this week,
pointed out that if the Game Com
mission accepts the land as a
Game Sanctuary, it would mean
that the land would remain on the
tax rolls and provide privileges ;
which the other plan did not in
clude.
They point out that the use of
the river would still be available
to hunters and sportsmen even
though their own land would be
closed to active hunting. It ls!
their hope and intent, that the
proposed man-made channel a
cross the bend area would be
permanently forestalled. They
point out that local sportsmen, j
by their move, might not get the
Ox-bow lake they had hoped for,
but they would retain the right
to boat on the river and hunt
along its banks the same as they
are permitted to do now. Mr.
Woods told The Enterprise that
his farming activities cause sever
al thousands of dollars per year
to be spent here for fuel, repairs,
living expenses for operators of
the land and miscellaneous other j
expenses Mr. McCampbeli and
others who operate the land j
spent a proportionate amount, he |
pointed out.
No answer to the proposed gift
had been made by the Game
Commission up to Tuesday.
