Brief Jackets, Soft High Waists Are The Newest By Eva Maa Davis The short, short story is the new one now. In general, Paris is inclined to wait until early autumn for de cisions of serious fashion mo ments. Not so, this spring—two silhouettes and one new “air” were unmistakable established. The new Paris silhouettes, First a blousing line that makes for love ly new ease above the waist, whether is’s a natural waist or lifted high. This new lift to the waist is the second Paris silhouet te change—high belts, ties, sash es, seams, that make the waistline anywhere from one to six inches inches higher—on suits and coats and dresses for day, late day, evening, for spring and summer. The new -‘air” in Paris is the air of beauty, an aura like spring itself, of melting beauty. The new bloused lines and high belts often help to creat it. So do white organdie ruffles— there’s a wonderful rush of this old white magic around the new Paris clothes. There are organdie blouses under flannel jackets, I chiffon blouses, under tweeds, low necklines above the high belted waists—and often there's I i a rose thrust into the belt. Cropped to the waist—and sometimes shorted—jackets help give spring’s costumes a little, long legged look that is both de lightfully fresh and young. This L part of the high rising fashion that spring from the Re i gency Period. It was then that | little, short jackets were the rage ' too. \ They go with the feeling for i skirt lines that rise to below the i bosom. The high placed sashes, the slim line skirts. These brief jacketed costumes of all spring’s clothes, make the wearing of heavier hats—either wider or heavier a must to finish the final picture. Costumes of this kind have al ready arrived in town, readv and waiting for the first breath of warmth to come along. They are engaging as spring flowers, and just as freshly pretty. Though the overall look is slender, there is considerable lee-' way in the skirts. There is one for every type of figure. Below the close clinging jack-' ets some of the skirts are slim ness itself, with no inch of un- j necessary width. Others have the easy softness of an unpressed pleat or two, or of all around pleats. All three such skirts are on the costumes selected today. Between them they can be worn by every woman, making the short cropped jacket costume an universally becoming one. Besides these three there will be many more costumes, suits and dresses as spring progresses, all playing on the same theme. You’ll see print dresses, with. short wool jackets. Illusion boleros will give the same general effect. Dresses under jackets that stop just below the bosom will have high rising skirts with print tops concealed beneath the boleros. Army Mothers’ Post No. 9, will sponsor its fourth an nual spring breakfast Sunday, March 11, at the Near North-j side YMCA, 22nd and Grant j Streets, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, j Mmes. ALABAMA LAWMAKER'S CALL TO RACE VIOLENCE IS CONDEMNED BY NAACP New York — The NAACP de nounced this week what it inter preted as an incitement to racial violence by a state representative in Alabama. In a telegram to Alabama Gov ernor James E. Folsom, NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins quoted an assertion by Rep. W. L. Martin of Greene county, Ala., that white people in Alabama must leave the state, “stay here and be humiliated, cr take up our shot guns.” “With the tensions created by resistance to the orders of the Su preme Court, this statement could spark tragic disorders in the State of Alabama,’ the Wilkins message declared. “Should anyone now take up his gun in an act of aggression, the j blame can be firmly fastened on Rep. Martin.” The NAACP, Mr. Wilkins said, “urges you to take every precau tion against such an eventuality, which could result not only in seri ous loss of life but would be most damaging to the reputation and ! prestige ot tne State of Alabama and our nation as well.” Mr. Wilkins’ telegram to the governor was dispatched on Febru ary 29th.
