Early risers know that picnics are more enjoyable if the surroundings are uncluttered with people—or things. Breakfast is an easy meal to take on a picnic. Ready-to-eat cereals are just right—no cooking is necessary—merely pack the cereal box in the picnic hamper. This breakfast takes just a few minutes to pack. MENU , Shredded Wheat . with Fresh Sliced Peaches and Milk Pecan Rolls Butter Chocolate Milk The peaches could be sliced and sugared at home. Additional sugar would not be necessary with the sweetened peaches. Pecan rolls are a favorite—butter probably would be unnecessary. Colorful plastic spoons, paper plates (except the cereal bowls) and gay bandannas for napkins add a festive note to the outdoor breakfast. Another way to vary the way you serve that all important meal—■ breakfast—is to serve it on trays that can be carried to the porch or patio. Doctors and dietitians agree that a basic breakfast of fruit, cereal, milk, bread and butter will provide one-fourth of the daily nutritional requirement. You and your family will feel better and work better, especially in the late morning hours, if you eat a basic breakfast th® year round. Raise Funds For Olympics Tubie Resnik (right) executive vice president of Calvert Distillers Co., wishes bon voyage to Joe Yancey, founder and coach of the FNew York Pioneer Club, who is leaving with a team of young athletes for the Olympic elimination trials in Boulder, Colorado. This is the third suc cessive year that Mr. Resnik has raised funds to help send one of Mr. Yancey’s Pioneer teams to the tryouts. _ Under Mr. Yancey’s leadership, the Pioneer Club has been fighting juvenile delinquency, by training young athletes and demonstrating the ideal of American brotherhood in action for over 19 years. At the mo ment he donates his coaching services for more than 250 young Negro and white athletes. Several weeks ago his Harlem track and field team won the Metropolitan AAU championship, breaking the hold of the New York AC for the first time in 26 years. In other years, the Pioneer Club has succeeded in placing a number of its stars on United States Olympic teams. Mr. Yancey was once chosen as the “Man of the Year” for his work with youth. _IT’S AMAZIMC! L-. _ ^ j THE NEWEST CARD GAME Don't believe it the next time some one tells you that Calypso is only a combination of Canasta and Bridge. Nothing could be farther from the truth as you yourself will discover the very first time you play the game. of course, is 'the exciting aew card game cur r e n t 1 y sweep ing the country .• Which gives * each player his own per sonal trump suit and is; played with ' four decks| of cards shuffled to- 1 gether to form one giant pack. Conceived in the romantic island of Trinidad, Calypso has already been described Iby one well-known card expert as the first really new card game since Whist. Whist first appeared way back in the sixteenth century. If this isn’t enough to convince you that Calypso is an entirely new game, a few comparisons with Canasta and (Bridge may help. i How does Calypso differ from JBridge? For one thing, there is no bidding in Calypso. For another, ’ there is no "dummy”; all four players play every hand. But Calypso’s big gest distinction is that it gives each player his own personal trump suit, determined at the beginning of the game by drawing cards and unaltered' by any of the cards received in en-^ suing deals. Calypso is a game in which tricks are taken, but unlike Bridge, the number of tricks captured has no significance and they are frequently broken up in the process of forming Calypsos. Calypso also differs from Bridge in that no one suit ranks higher than another. What about Canasta? The games are similar in that the main object in Calypso is to complete as many Calypsos as possible during the four deals comprising a game. But you cannot add to a Calypso (a complete run of 2, 3, 4, etc., up to the ace of your personal suit) by melding from your hand; you build the Calypso only with cards in tricks won by you and your partner. There is no meld ing or discarding in Calypso, no wild cards or bonus cards; Jokers aren’t even used. Perhaps the best news for most card fans is that a Calypso game is completed in a half hour or less while a game of Canasta can some times run several hours. You can get a free, pocket-sized leaflet containing the complete rules for playing Calypso merely by send ing a stamped, self-addressed envel ope to Playing Cards. 420 Lexington Avenue, New York 17. Distinctive Table Top IF YOU have a coffee table with a marred top but itherwise good appearance, you :an make it like new without i lot of laborious refinishing. And at the same time you can give the table a distinctive feature that it never had — a marble pattern top with a sur face that takes abuse. The simple job is done by applying a new top in the form of a plastic-finished Marlite panel in one of five authentic marble patterns. Widely used for walls and ceilings, the ma terial is available at lumber yards. Saw a panel to fit, allowing j a fraction of an inch for smoothing edges by planing and sanding. Bond the panel to the table with adhesive and leave weights on top until the ad hesive is set. Wax the edges or paint them to harmonize with the marble pattern and table finish. Your new table top, with its baked-on plastic finish over a tempered Masonite hardboard base, will defy attacks by bev erages, heat and wear. Damp cloth wiping will clean it. One of her favorite tricks is taking advantage of “specials” in meats at the supermarket, buying extra cuts and storing them in her home freezer to stretch her food dollars. But she also knows proper freezing must follow her trip to the store—; if her thrift-wise shopping is really to pay off. Thus she keeps in mindl three important points about freezing meats at home: 1. Choose high quality meats. Since freezing does not improve the flavor of any food, the frozen product will be no better than the food in its original state. 2. Package meats properly. Choose a wrapping material which keeps air out. When air is allowed to reach food during freezer storage, the result is loss of moisture, accompanied by a change in flavor. The food soon becomes unpalatable. The condition known as “freezer burn” occurs when air enters the package. One of the best freezer wrapping materials on the market is the new plastic wrap made of saran. Because this transparent film clings to the shape of any food being wrapped, it is possible to mold the film closely even to irregular cuts of meat, such as roasts, squeezing out a maximum amount of air from the package. Follow this simple method: First, pad any bony edges with an extra piece of saran; then overwrap with a single thickness of the film using the “drug store wrap” method; pull saran tightly around meat to get the closest possible seal before applying freezer tape; tape and label. Masking tape which may be written on is good and makes labeling easy. 3. Label foods accurately. Label each package with date, name of product, and approximate number of servings. It is helpful to add an “expiration date” to the label—the maximum storage time. Most freezer manuals will have storage time charts. Check freezer occasionally to use up those foods stored longest. Use all foods before expiration date. Careful attention to good freezer techniques and proper packaging will insure a high quality frozen food product. . ...
