Women hold the decisive power
in the November election. Nearly
2,000,000 more women than men
will be eligible to vote this year.
The major campaign issues—
. high cost of living; the protection
-v°f children and family life; civil
rights and world peace—these are
all issues of vital concern to
womer. everywhere. Now is the
time to secure the effective politi
cal actnyi of women to support
the kind of government the Repub
lican Party will bring to America.
Strong leadership is needed in
the days ahead to direct into the
right channels the political activity
of women everywhere. A good job
of political education is needed
among all classes and groups of
women.
A careful study of the record of
the Republican Party and of its
standard bearer, Gov. Thomas E.
Dewey, should be encouraged and
sponsored in every community.

Impressive Gains By Women
Impressive gains have been
made by women under the banner
of the Republican Party. As far
back as 1896 the party platform
carried a plank on the "‘rights of
women.” In the 1900 Republican
Party Convention one woman was
slated as a delegate; in 1948, 112
women were delegates and 258
were alternates!
Along with the increased recog
nition of women in the party or
ganization and activities, has come
increase in the number of women
in service as government officials
—both Federal and State, elective
and appointive. Significantly, the
greatest increase in appointive or
elective positions for women is re
corded in those states with Repub
lican Governors.

In 1947 the Women’s Interna
tional Exposition awarded Thomas
E. Dewey its gold medal, honoring
him as “the Governor who has
done most to further the interests
of women in his state.”
With 224 women appointees in
key government posts and numer
ous women in other positions,
New York has twice as many
women in government service as
the next highest state. One of
these 224 is a colored person.
Champion of Equality
When we examine further the
record of Governor Dewey, we find
that just as he took a forth-right
stand for the interests of women
—he courageously led a successful
fight in the New York General As
sembly for the passage of a Fair
Employment Practices Bill.
Thus, he has proven himself an
advocate of equality of oppor
tunity for all, regardless of racial
or national origin or religious
affiliation.

vividly and impressively the kind

publican National Committee for
the past two and a half years. Mr.
Washington, who is serving his
fourth term as a member of the
Illinois Commerce Commission, has
taken leave of absence for the dur
ation of the Presidential Cam
paign.
Bom at Columbus, Indiana, in
1903, he attended local schools and
was graduated from the University
of Indiana where he majored in
Journalism and Business Adminis
tration, and also studied law.
After three years as business
manager of the Gary Sun at Gary,
Indiana, = Mr. Washington became
secretary of the Atlantic Casualty
Insurance Company and became
occupied with other interests di
rected by J. J. McCaffrey, Indiaite
industrialist.
Named business manager, of the
Chicago Defender, one of the coun
try’s leading Negro newspapers, in
1935, he became general manager
five years later. He holds mem
bership in and is active with
