Mrs. Faison Ends Ohio Visit Mrs. Apolla Faison and son Tommy have returned to the city after visiting Mrs. Faisons sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Webb of Dayton, Ohio. Indians Popped Corn Popcorn was raised by the Indi ans long before Columbus arrived in the Western hemisphere. It became an important commercial crop about 1880. Formerly it was sup posed that the popping of corn was caused by the volatilization of oil in the grain. ROOSEVELT NO. 30, LEGION POST NEWS Post Plans for Entertainment of Soldiers Inaugurates New Policy The House Committee of Roosevelt Post met Sunday at temoon September 26th and because of the increase in the Negro personnel at Offett Air Field and public demand, announced the Post Lounge will be open on Friday even ings, Saturday, Sunday, Mat inee and Sunday night. A fine entertaining band with enter tainment will be a feature of each night’s program. All Le gionaires, Auxiliary and their guest are cordially invited to use the Legion Lounge for their parties. 1 Commander Prestige stated, “That because of the increase of Negro Soldiers coming into the Communty on week ends, it was the duty and responsi bility of the Legion to provide clean and wholesome entertain ment for them”. He directed the House Committee to study and plan means to provide the best entertainment possible for these boys in unitorm. The Pqsij House Committee will entertain with a Grand’ Party for the Negro personnel and officers sometime in the near future. It is the responsibil ity of the Legion and the Business Men on North 24th Street to make these boys feel we are interested and are wel come in the Commnuity. LADIES AUXILIARY ■ PLEDGE 100 PER CENT Support to Anniversary Program The chairman of the Anni versary Committee, Edward Turner and Commander Pres tidge met with the Ladies Aux iliary, Tuesday, September 2i The general program was out lined by the Chairman of the Anniversary Committee. Mrs. Pearl Brufnmell, President of the Ladies Auxiliary pledged the wholhearted support of the Auxiliary and immediately called a meeting of a special ' program committee to make plans for ther “Day” October 28th. The Ladies Auxiliary have extended ail invitaton to Mrs. Mary Prince member of I the State Board of control to be their principal speaker. Frank Payne, MembW of Post Eexecutive Committee Re ceives Laudits From House Committee Chairman Frank Payne, member of the Post executive committee and in attendance at Legion bar came in for high praises from William Pierson, vice chair man of bar committee and members of the house commit te for his efficient and genial manner in handling the Leg ionnaires and guests at flhe Legion. Genial Frank Payne is winning many friends fo the Legion and cordially in vites his many friends to drop in and see him. Frank stated, “he and other Legionnairs will not be sat isfied until the Legion Lounge is open seven nights a week.’’ Membership In Legion On Steady increase. The chairman of the mem bership committee announces that the membership drive is progressing according to plans. The Legionnaires are urged to renew their dues without de lay, as the membership com mittee has pledged a ceftan number of memberships each month until 500 members are obtained, and then the Post will start on the second 500 members.
