The class gave President Haynes an enlarged photo of himself as a gift. As most graduating class, they, too, planted a tree on the campus. What was the name of the tree? Pardon my manner—It was a Linden Tree. The thrill that was possess ed by the senior and under classmen was spoiled on Sat urday, May 22. Why? Because final examination began and everyone had to begin his last minute studying. However, the citizen ot Um iaha wish to congratulate the following persons for their achievement in College. NEGRO MOVIE MAKES BID FOR NATIONAL BOX OFFICE > “The Betrayal” -All Negro Financed Production Ooen Tune 24 on Broadwav f"""u. " ..^ Negro movie Makes bid bor National Box Office “The . Betrayal”—All Negro Financed Production To Open On Broadway, June 24th. Three high spots are cover ed in Oscar Micheaux’s sen* sationaj epic motion picture, “The Betrayal,” which the author adapted from his own novel, “The Wing From Now where.” The movie will be the first colored produced, financ ed and directed motion picture to play at a downtown theatre in New York. In this instance, it will be at the Mansfield Theater which housed “Anna Lucasta” for three years. “The Betrayal”, is fundamentally a story of a struggle of a young Negro to achieve financial stability and create a place for himself by becoming a suc cessful rancher. Martin Eden (Leroy Collins) is the hero of the story. At the bottom photo you can see Eden on the floor after having been shot by his wife, Linda (Verlie Cowan) This is thrilling photoplay, and climaxes frantic attempts on Eden's part to reconciliate with Linda who had been forc ed from her husband’s home by her father, Dr. Lee, (Harris Gaines, Jr.) a minister from Illinois. Fortunately, Eden was not seriously injured. In the top photo, Dr. Lee is killed by his own daughter, when she realizes that her father has de liberately ruined her married life, and deliberately destroyed all chances for her happiness by making her ’betray the man she loved. The center photo shows what can happen when the race cpiestion is discussed. Eden, who is in Chicago visit ing friends, has just been ad vised by the young man get ting the slap that he should t not marry a colored woman J but should marry a wane wo man who would he willing to sacrifice in his behalf until he was able to achieve the goals he had set for himself. He pointed out to Eden that in spite of the fact that he had a college education he was still a pullman porter with a house full of children because he got no help or cooperation from his wife. Naturally, his wife resented his statement anJ slaps his face. These are just three of the high spots of Mr. Micheaux’s sensational pic ture, “The Betrayal,” which will open at the Mansfield Theater in New York City, and is expected to play for capac ity audiences. This is a Ne gro’s interpretation < f the race question. This is the simple story of the millions of hard working and God fearing Ne groes who are struggling for their place in the sun.
