and preserved with creosote by im
proved methods, are good for 30
years. Stretching the life of a tie
sixfold saves considerable as it
costs more than a dollar, not count
tag labor, to renew each tie. There I
•re are nearly 1,300,000,000 ties
constantly wearing out on all the
railroad lines in the United States.
