Is the operation of the taverns in your community better than last year? Have the tavern 1 owners profited by errors they may have made? Have they put into operation the sugges tions of the State Liquor Com mission and the Nebraska Committee? Are they learn ing how to better operate in the public interest? Answers to questions like these should determine whether or not 1947 licenses should be granted or refused. A retailer whose past perform ance shows he has a lack of proper regard for the public in terest—who carelessly or de liberately violates the laws and general rules of good conduct — has proven himself un worthy of the trust of a li cense. He should be replaced by a reputable citizen who has the right attitude and ability. Now is the relicensing period. If tavern-keepers in your com- i munity do not measure up to j -their responsibilities, this is I 'vour time to act. i NEBRASKA COMMITTEE' □ '■s' United. States Brewers . I Foundation Charles E. S | HAWKINS Talking) TEX BODDIE vs- RIVIERA Last Monday evening at the City Auditorium I saw a much be wildered Tex Boddie trying to de fend himself against Kid Riviera, of St. Louis night club bouncer. Tex with the advantages failed to use them. Tex had heighth and reach over his much shorter op ponent and speed also, but what good were they when not used properly. I still say that when Tex is taught to defend himself a i gainst a fast left hook and learns to step in and stab with that right, then and only then dear reader, will he have accomplished some thing. The Kid constantly would catch Boddie on the side of the head with a left hook an Boddie, instead of stepping in, would step back— right into the path of that hook— thus seting himself up for wfcat followed. A knockout in the fifth round. It is not only my opinion, but al so the opinion of others.I have not just heard this, it is my opin ion and other opinions that is it looked as if Tex did better when he had Maxwell Butcher with him. Butcher, no ball of fire in the ring himself, but as a sparring partner, he was tops. He would keep Boddie on his toes. .. in other words, Tex was a much sharper puncher and a more "sure of him self fighter” than he is now. The walkout of his training quarters has been a day of regret. o o o BULL WINS OVER HARTFIELD In the sixth round special event I saw Joe Hartfield make a few mistakes, in fact, in all of his fights he has done the same thing. Joe leaves himself open too much after leading with a left or right Jimmy Bull, a cool fighter with quick reflexes, took advantage of the situation and also the decision, o o o TRICK OUT OF BAG In the opener Speedy Moore pull ed a trick out of his bag when he KOed Jackie O’Biren of St. Louis in the first. Billy Corn wall knocked out Norman Magstri in third. o o o AT KANSAS CITY AAU. In Kansas City last week at the Junior National AAU. James Greg ory lost a decision in his first fight. Gregory leading all the way and always keeping his man on the go, lost by a decision that the fans booed for ten minutes. James Warmack 118 of Omaha, las leading his fight in all depart ments only to be knocked out by a desperation punch by his opponent in the third round. Alex. McUack lost a decision to the K. C. favorite Kurt Kennedy. McNack rocked Kennedy several times with hard rights but the K. C. heavyweight took them and re tailiated with some of his own. thus McNack losing the decision. o o o JACKIE STILL RATES THE HEADLINES In the Professional World of Baseball, Jackie Robinson still rates the headlines. It looks as if he will get to play first base for the Dodgers. Robinson has never played first base before, but he looks like a natural in doing so. o o o SOCCER TEAM The Near Northside Y Soccer team is at it again. They shut out Falstaff to the tune of 5-0 in the City Recreation Spring Soccer League opener Sunday. Center Jim Hall accounted for four goals. Hampton accounted for the oth er. Players for N. N. S.
