where. Contributions from the
four corners of the Country help
to alleviate the pain and privation.
That is as it should be, and no
think.ng man would have it other
wise. Who knows when disaster
will strike next—or where? And
who will turn a deaf ear to those
who are suffering in mind, or body
or spirit?
ALL MEMBERS OF ONE BODY
Probably no better illustration of
this national body could be given
us than that from the pen of the
Apostle Paul, the great Christian
missionary to the Gentiles.
This great philosopher and schol
ar wrote: “—the body is one and
yet has many parts, and all parts
of the body, many as they arc,
form one body. For we have all—
Jews or Greeks, slaves or free men
—been baptized in one spirit to
form one body, and we have all
been saturated with one spirit.
For the body does not consist of
one part but of many. If one part
suffers, all the parts share its suf
ferings. If a part has honor done
to it, the parts enjoy it, too.” (I
Cor. 12:12-14.)
THE NATIONAL BODY
In like fashion there is a nation
al body which is composed of
many members; those fellow-Am
ericans who come from groups
with divergent differences of rac
ial and religious backgrounds. We
should add those of contrasting
national and social status. Few
would urge uniformity, but many
would recommend a basic and nec
essary unity, an oneness of plan
and purpose unity of spirit.
Our go vernor has proclaimed the
week of March 30 as a Negro
Health Week- He reminds us that
the health of its Negro citizens is
one of the responsibilities of a
state. Said he: "We must wage
an all-out fight against sickness
that strikes at home and family a
mong our Negro population.”
The skeptic or scoffer who sees
no relationship of himself with this
problem might give some inquiry
to the inter-relationship health
and employment (affecting all of
us) and education and relief rolls
and tax-supported institutions. All
these beyond humanness, neigh
borliness, brotherhood.

Good Wiring Enhances Value of Home I
And the Mortgage Deal Bankers Say
To obtain the best home mortgage deal, bankers and lenders urge
that you check the wiring in your architect’s plans—or if you plan
to buv a home already built, check the wiring, too. They emphasize
that a home with a well-designed<
wiring system stays younger long
er and is a better investment risk.
Reason for this counsel is that
electrical usage in the home is
Appraisers say a home is as
young as its veins—electrical
wiring, that is.
increasing by leaps and bounds.
Wiring installed on the basis of
today’s needs may be obsolete in
a few years.
The bankers, as well as elec
trical technicians, point to homes
built twenty years ago. They were

wired for lights chiefly, plus two
or three small appliances. Today
the average home has at least
eleven appliances and twice the
number of lamps and fixtures.
The twenty-year-old homes al
ready are electrically obsolete,
necessitating widespread use of
makeshift extension cords. In
most cases the wire itself is too
small to supply sufficient current
for the expanded electrical loads.
Result: Sluggish, inefficient and
costly operation of electrical
equipment
Appraisers, consequently, now
place wiring high on the list of
factors to be checked as contrib
utors to home depreciation and
early obsolescence. The bankers,
therefore, are placing increasing
emphasis on their advice that you
make certain the wiring is ade
quate for present and future
needs before you approve a single
blueprint or sign a purchase con
tract
An eight-page booklet, “Check
Your Wiring,” details what con
stitutes an adequate wiring sys
tem. A copy can be obtained by
sending five cents in coin or
stamps to the National Adequate
Wiring Bureau, Dept. B, 155 K.

INDUSTRIAL DEPARTMENT
MEANING AND FUNCTION OF
THE INDUSTRIAL DEPT.
OF THE OMAHA URBAN
LEAGUE
Less than two months ago a
new department was added to the
Urban League of Omaha. It was
the Industrial Department, having
as a broad function matters of In
dustrial Relations.
Like the builder whose first con
cern is a properly constructed
foundation, the Industrial Depart
ment also seeks a solid base. This
base is made up of information
Its component parts consist of the
factual and the statistical. The
base first obtains and then it keeps
informed, fro mall angles, about
Negroes at work, at business, in
the professions, and all other par
tially or totally unemployed.
OBJECTIVES : The basic aims
and objectives of the Industrial
Department shall be to safe-guard
the Negro worker in whatever em
ployment gains he has alreadj
made; to increase his opportunit
ies for developing new skills anc
winning new promotions and to gel
Negroes employed and integratec
into every possible industry anc
busines firm in the area.
TOOLS: Like the farmer or the
gardener who never goes to the
field or the gardener without hi!
tools, the Industrial Departmen
recognizes the necessity of tools tc
attempt its efforts. It recognize:
the need of a strong Industrial R<
lations Committee to serve as
bulwark and a support. This Coi

ROSE MURPHY IS VAUGHN MONROE GUEST
“CHEE-CHEE SWING” girl, Rose Murphy, was guest on a recent Hollywood broad
cast of CBS’ “Vaughn Monroe Show” and delighted coast-to-coast audiences with
her tinkling, miniature voice and her unusual arrangements. Miss Murphy had been
appearing at the Blue Angel night club in New York before coming to Hollywood

tion and interracial in character, is
a community representation and
is an adjunct to the planning and
the activities of the Department.
It will share equally in the disap
pointments and upheavals and will
share equally in its glories and ac
complishments.
FUNCTION: The work of the In
dustrial Department is diversified
. and interesting. Interesting be
cause it does not dwell with one
[ line of activities but many. It
would be impossible to state all the
functions that may be caried on in
! the Industrial Department because
i many things occur without warn
; ing or foreboding. Therefore, these
i functions are not listed too specif
! icaly but more from a general
> viewpoint. The general functions
i of the Department are as follows:
n It will coordinate, advise and con

Telephone Wages

■S-.
Are Good
No Strike Is Justified
Telephone wages now are as high or higher than
the general community level of wage rates for com
parable work.
Telephone people have had six general wage in
creases since 1941, representing an average increase of
over 75% in wage rates, which is considerably greater
than the increase in living costs.
Telephone people have good working conditions.
Their work is steady and they have 6 holidays and 1
2 and 3 weeks vacations each year with pay, depend
ing on the length of service.
Telephone people also have sickness benefits
and pensions, with all costs paid by the Company.
The Company wants to be fair to its personnel
but it ^lso feels that it should be fair to those who use
the service and who, in the final analysis, pay the
wage bill.
The Union is demanding increases in wages of
from $12 a week to as high as $35 a week, which would
result in an average increase of $17.10 a week or an in
crease of 421/a cents an hour for all employees of the
Company represented by the Union.
Union demands total $30,000,000 a year. This is
equivalent to an average increase of $2 a month for
every telephone, including extensions.

It is the function also to cooperate
with and implement the work of
organized placement services- Spec

Civil Service lists.
VETERANS: The Industrial De
partment maintains pertinent in
formation covering the Service
Men’s Act, for instance, G. I. Bill,
and is prepared to properly advise
and counsel with veterans and sol
diers regarding employment and
all other matters as well.
VOCATION AND EDUCATION:
The Department has planned a
function of maintaining upto date
information on educational and
training institutions for the pur
pose of educational and vocational
assistance. Preparation has been
made to give complete information
It also has as a function the or
ganization and promotion of a
workers’ educational program. The
Department will obtain statistical
information regarding Negro emr
ployees and Negro-owned business
places. And finally, the Vocation
al and Educatioanl section will
plan, supervise and cooperate with
worthy and meaningful surveys.
CIVIL SERVICE
The Industrial Department of
the Omaha Urban League has set
up a Civil Service Division for the
purpose of giving help and service i
to constituents in the community, |
both veterans and others. Ali
