Buffalo, March 23 (Specia) “Bibles for Berlin”, “Test
ments for Tokyo” were the slogans suggested here today by
Dr. H alter A. Maier, of Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, in j
an international broadcast of the Lutheran Hour. Comment
> ing on Christ’s pVea from the cross, “Father forgive them, for
they know not what they do,” he asserted that the time is now
here for Christian forces to reflect the compassion taught by
their creed and bring the Gospel to our defeated enemies. The
forces of radical atheism have been far busier in the defeated
countries than many Church groups; and he predicted that
unless there is an awakiing to our religious responsibilities in
these lands, they will be won for bold unbelief.
Dr. Maier cited a recent government directive declaring:
“Training films, literature or training aids which a definite
purpose of inspiring hatred or of directing hatred against
any specific former enemy are being discontinued.” If the
government calls a halt to hatred, he asserted, certainly the
Christian forces of America cannot refrain from pleading for
brotherly love .
The failure of force as a means of establishing peace, he
concluded, emphasizes the necessity of establishing a spiri
tual foundation for international understanding through the
preaching and practice of Christ’s GospeL

An Excerpt Of Dr. Walter A. Maier,
Lutheran Hour Speaker, From
The Sermon Of March 16,1947
The pain and disgrace of bear
ing the cross suddenly ended for
Jesus, just as your sorrows will
finally, and often unexpectedly,
stop. Our Lord had not had a mo
ment of sleep during the last twen
ty-four hours; instead, He had
been subjected to torture and tor
| ment, scourging and slashing,
mocking and misery. Neither food
nor drink had crossed His lips; and
far worse than this physical pain
was the agony of His soul as He
paid the appalling price for your
soul. No wonder, then, that Jesus
collapsed under the pressure of the
cross, and that the soldiers, eager
to be through with the ghastly bus
iness of killing, “ LAID HOLD UP
ON ONE SIMON, A CYRENIAN
COMING OUT OF THE COUN
TRY, AND ON HIM THEY LAID
THE CROSS, THAT HE MIGHT
BEAR IT AFTER JESUS.”
Some say that Simon was a Ne
gro—and he did come from sun
baked Cyrenian Africa, Person
ally, I wish that we could prove
that this cross-bearer for Christ
was a member of the race long
burdened by crosses of cruelty
which we, the white people, have
laid on their backs. Did you read
the newspaper story of a frail Ne
gro woman who for the last thirty
years worked in unpaid drudgery
for seventeen hours each day as a
veritable slave to a socialite Bos
ton couple? She was not permit
ted to see relatives or friends; her
food was the left-overs; her cloth
es, the cast-offs. She slept in a cel
lar cubby-hole, large enough only
for a cot. She was not allowed to
attend church nor to read even the
Bible. But she recalled: “I had
learned some Bible passages in
school, and I still remember them.
They were a comfort to me during
all those years.” “Could anything
be more cruel?” you ask. “Yes,”
we answer, “the persistent policy
of some white churches to bar the
Negro from the privilege of wor
ship! The Holy Spirit help us rec
ognize ever more clearly that “God
is no respecter of persons,” that
He loves the souls of all men,

A Call To Prayer
BISHOP WRIGHT CALLS
AFRICAN METHODISTS TO
OBSERVE “GOOD FRIDAY”
AS A DAY OF FASTING
AND PRAYER
New York, March 16—In an im
passioned speech to the AME,
Preachers meeting of New York,
held in Bethel Church, Bishop
Wright called every presiding eld
er, every pastor, officer and mem
ber of the African Methodist chur
ch to seriously observe Friday,
April 4 as a day of Fasting and
Prayer. “Let none of us taste food
from the rising to the setting of
the sun, but let us gather in our
places of worship and concentrate
upon spiritual things. Let this
day be a day of compassion, repen
tance, and cleansing- For we have
sinned against God. We have sat
by while forces of evil have, like
terijiites, tried to undermine the
very foundations of our church.
And we are all guilty, by omission
if not by commission. Some have
like Saul of Tarsus, held the gar
ments, so to speak, of those who
"stoned Stephen”, others have been
like spectators on the side lines,
observing our degradation but
making but feeble, if any efforts
at all, to stem the evil tide. Greed,
political corruption, selfish ambit
ion have been temporarily halted,
but not wholly. They can be stop
ped only by the power of God. We
can stop them only as God rules in
our hearts, cleanses us, and gives
us determination and courage to
do what is right. The greatest
need in' our lives.
"For this reason I call all Afri
can Methodist under my jurisdic
tion in New York, in New Jersey,
in New England, in Bermuda, in
Kentucky and in Tennessee to your
knees in prayer all day Friday,
April 4. Touch no food but the
"bread of life”, from the rising to
the setting of the sun. Pastors,
please call your congregations to
worship. Start early, go all day,
until late at night. Take advan
tage of the ceremony of the cruc
ifixon to emphasize the sacrifice
we should all make for Christ’s
church, as He gave His life for us.
Have long periods of silence; read
appropriate portions of God’s word
discourse briefly upon “the seven
last words; “give room for much
music. On your knees at the altar
reconsecrate yourselves anew, and
give sufficient time for all who
care to express themselves in
prayer and song and testimony.
Let no church neglect this great
duty. In places where there are
many churches, let them come to
gether for this service. Let us
pray earnestly for a Pentecostal
outpouring of the Spirit upon us
all.”
THE COMMON DEFENSE
Truth Shows
The Way
(by REV. WM. C. KERNAN
Here before us we have some
items taken at random from the
news of the day. In Williamtown,
Massachusetts, students of Wil
liams College picketed a barber
shop to support their charge that
the shop had discriminated against
a fellow student, a Negro. One of
the pickets was formerly president
of the Williams Christian Associa
tion. Another was a member of
Gargoyle, a senior honor society.
Six women students of the Uni
versity of California—representing
the three major faiths in America,
several nationalities, and three rac
-es—started out in February on a
two-weeks nation-wide speaking
campaign in the interests of relig
ious and racial harmony.
In New York City Mr. Charles
Evans Hughes, Jr., Chairman of
the Mayor's Committee on Unity,
sounded a warning against the
threat to our peace and security
stemming from racial and religious
prejudice, ut, he added, a “sure
ground for hope” exists that the
campaign against prejudice is sue
ceeding. "There have been and
there will be setbacks,” he said,
“but, measured in perspective, the
curve is steadily and impressively
upward.”
These are facts of significance.
They show what has been happen
ing to the people of the United
States in the past ten years which
the pitiless spotlight of truth has
been thrown on the activities of
those who have sought to spread
malicious propaganda to set race
against race and religion against
religion- As a result, the Americ
an people are more aware today
than they have hitherto been of
the dangers inherent in the propa
ganda of the hate-mongers—and
they are acting to preserve the de
mocracy which subversive groups
would destroy.
But. these news items indicate
something else. They show that
the methods which loyal Americ
ans use to safeguard democracy
and to overcome prejudice are in
accordance with the tenets of reas
onableness, decency, and jersuas
ion. They are inspired by justice.
They are designed to serve the
true interests of all the American
people. They are in direct con
trast to the methods used by sub
versive propagandists who move to

A clear definition of American

' PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN ’
BROTHERHOOD
LESSON TEXT—John 17:1-11. 20-23. j
MEMORY SELECTION--And now I am|
no more in the world, but these are 1b
the world, and I come to thee. Holy
Father, keep through thine own name
those whom thou hast given me. that
they may be one. as we are.—John 17:11.
The voice of the Son of God lifted
in audible prayer! What could
more sacred and more blessed? Hq
who had by act and example taught
Jiis disciples loving service (Johrt
13), and had spoken to them word^
of comfort and assurance (John 14
16), now prayed for himself, for)
them, and for us.
While he spoke most intimately;
with the Father as his only begotten
Son, he prayed aloud that his disci
ples might hear his prayer and join
[with him in it
kThis prayer Is often called thq
igh-priestly prayer of Christ, and
rightly so, for here the "one medtl
ator between God and men, the mad
Christ Jesus” (I Tim. 2:5) spolaj
as “the High Priest of mankind whd
begins his sacrifice by offering him4
self to God with all his people”!
(Godet).
First we find that he prayed far
himself as he spoke of
I. Salvation Finished—Then Glory
with the Father (w. 1-5).
He looked up and said, "Father,"
that was all. No struggling, im
pleading, just the recognition of hij
own divinity, his intimate and unique
Sonship to God. Throughout thii
entire prayer the same close rela
tionship is found. It was not as w«
would pray “Our Father,” but “Fa
ther.”
Jesus was the Son of God. Yes,
he was and is God. He and the Fa*
:ther are one in blessed eternal, in
finite unity. But as he is in thej
Father, we who believe are in him.:
So the poet well says:
"Near, so very near to God,
Nearer I cannot be,
For in the person of his Son j
I am as near as he.” :
This divine Redeemer, who laid,
down his glory when he came t#
earth (Phil. 2:7, 8) to be a Saviour,;
was now ready to take up that gloryj
- ■ :
again. He spekt- ot the work ul sal
vation as completed—for in his obe
dient soul the death on the cross
which was just ahead was already
accomplished.
Now he was ready for the Father
to glorify him even as he had glori-;
fied the name of the Father. That
prayer was answered, and Christ:
now sits at the right hand of the'
Father in heaven. What a glorious'
Saviour we have!
His prayer was soon turned to|
those who had believed in him. They,
were precious to him. for they were,
given to him by the Father.
11. Out of the World—Then Kept
by the Father (vv. 6-11).
There is something powerfully as
suring to the believer to read the
words of Jesus which declare that
these who had believed on him. had
been given to him by the Father.
They belonged to the Father, and
he gave them to the Son. They kept
the Word of God. and thus they
knew the Son as the manifestation
of the Father’s name. What could
be more certain for time and eter-i
nity!
Note that they were taken “out of
the world”—that does not mean that
they left this earth. They lived here
as we live here, but they were de
livered from that evil world power
which opposes God.
Some professed Christians who
find their greatest delight in fellow
ship with the Christ-rejecting world
had better read carefully here, fori
it appears that the one who is truly;
in Christ is not "of the world.”
These disciples had to remain in;
the world (though they were not ofi
it!) and they needed to be kept.
Now that the earthly ministry of;
Jesus was to be brought to a close,
he tenderly placed them anew in the
Father’s mighty hand. Again we
say, what could be more blessedly
secure than that!
We must note that our Lord had,
a special interest and prayer for hi*,
own. Verse 9 obviously does not
mean that he is not interested in aU
mankind. He died for them (Joha
3:16). But here his prayer was for
his own, and in that prayer thW
world was left out That makes ua
feel still more assured in him. He,
the blessed Son of God and only
Saviour, prayed for me, for you!
The closing words of verse 11
reach out into the third petition Of
our Lord, as he prayed for their
III. Unity In Christ—Then Testi
mony to the World (w. 20-23).
The verses between the foregoing
division and this one (w. 12-19) are
Important. Our Lord was concerned
about the hatred of the world foe
these who had received the Word of
the Father, and yet he would no(
have them taken out of the world,
They were to be his witnesses—even
jas we are to be in our day. Theg
must remain in the world; but being
| one in Christ and sanctified through
the truth, they were to be kept toi
God and used by him.
