Watch Your
Speech
By Ruth Taylor
I was listening to a speech one
night a dull, dry-as-dust speech—
and my mind was wandering, when
suddenly I heard the speaker say:
“For the old adage of ‘No taxation
without representation’ one might
well substitute the new slogan of
‘No criticism without study’.”
If we could do that we could re
volutionize human relations. If we
would understand how seldom
would we criticize it? Instead we
would understand it. Prejudice al
ways menaces the person holding
it.

But he who condemns another un
justly or who bears false witness
against his brother is a thief. As I
Shakespeare said: “He who steals
my purse steals trash: but he that
robs me of my good name, robs
~te of that which not enricheth
him, but makes me poor indeed”.
How do we do that? By general
izing against a man, by attributing
to a group the mistakes of an in
dividual, by broad characterization j
by not taking the troubble to learn j
all the facts.
Go over the people whom you
think you dislike. Why don’t you
like them? How many do you dis
like with good cause? How many
because you are not considering
them as individuals but are lump
ing them as a group?
Do you speak carelessly of peo
ple? Do you assume more know
ledge than you really posses? Plu
tarch said: “He who reflects on
another man’s want of breeding,
shows he wants it as much him
self”.
You wouldn’t touch one of your
neighbor’s possessions? But what
are you doing to his good name ?
A man for whom I have great
admiration said one day, in speak
ing of another man who had done
him harm, "If I were small enough

a BOOK
REVIEW
The Progressive Book Club takes
pleasure in presenting as its Oct.
selection an important book on
race relations. To Master, A Long
Goodnight by Brion Gysin, prior to
publication is already well on its
way to creating a nation-wide con
troversy.
The book, an historical narra
tive, is based on the life and times
of Josiah Henson.. the real-life
“Uncle Tom” of Harriet Beechei
Stowe’s famous novel. The book
goes much further than the pre
senting of this until-now buried
information. It gives in a new and
challenging way the historical
roots of the uncle tom approach to
minority problems, a question on
which minority groups themselves
are split.
Sinclair Lewis brings out these
points in his review of the book:
The book is interesting in its
revelation that the model for Mrs.
Stowe’s Uncle Tom did not died
edifying in slavery but played a
dirty trick on dear ole Massa by
escaping to Canada and founding
a colony of fugitive slaves. It is
important in its study of how vic
iouslyy the clowning and the un
cle tommism that delight the bos
ses may retard any minority..a
topic more critical than most read
ers know.
