letter to a girl and he says she's
one of his old girl friends and they
promised to continue to write to
each other What shall I do. con
tinue to let him correspond with
her?
Ans: You have already let him
know that you do not approve of
his renewing this friendship so let
matters be fqr awhile. This affair
may die a natural death..for it
takes two to carry on a corres
pondence. If t continues, .take a
firm stand, make him realize how
silly he would feel if you decide
to take up the same hobby.
E M S I do appreciate the

I months ano now i am to Become
a mother for this hoy. That is why
he quit me He quit speaking for
awhile, then he took me to the
show When I told him about me
going to become a mother, he said
Now here you come with that jive
again. Then he left me. He some
times acts like he wants me, then
he don't.
A ns: You are both young and ir
responsible which accounts for the
present state of affairs. This is
reallv a case for parents to step
in and help solve. My advice is for
you and your mother to have a
| friendly consultation with your
! family minister or doctor and so
[ licit his aid in reaching an under
standing with the young man in
volved. It is unfair for you to as
sume all the responsibbility in this
, case.
C. H Please give me some ad
vice concerning school this year. I
am undecided about what school
1 am going to. Which school do
you think I would be successful.
Ans: You have set your heart
on enrolling in the State College
why not pursue that course. Go
there with the determination to do
your best work and be happy in
doing so This is a wonderful op
portunity for you friend Clemin
tine. so make the most of it.
M. M.—I wrote you before. You
helped me wonderfully so I am
asking you to help me again. I
been going with a married man
for nearly four years. He was nice
to me but I had got tired of that
and wanted a HB of my own. So
in March I met a man. I liked him
fine but have found out he drinks
awful heavy. Tell me what to do?
Ans: Whiskey drinking to excess
and marriage don’t mix. Even now
your found friend realizes this. .
for he is at this time engaged in
the process of divorce proceedings
all brought about by his, as yet,
uncontrollable desire for alcohol.
A boozer is a poor matrimonial
risk Try to encourage him to take
a pledge against drink. A good
dose of old fashioned religion has
straigtened out many a heavy
drinker.
N. M. G.—As a general thing I
always consult you on anything I
am planning It is about my son.
1 want to go to New York to see
him as I haven't seen him in 21
years, only his picture. He says
his job with the Gov t won t al
low’ him to come down here and
see me as yet. If you say it is OK
I will leave for NY in Sept.
Ans: Before you leave, Mrs. G..
it would be well to consult your
boy regarding the proposed visit.
As his mother, you do not want to
do anything to hurt'his feelings or
impose upon him in any way so I
suggest that you first get his ap
proval on your visit. Surprise vi
sits can sometimes turn out to be
very disappointing and painful for
all concerned.

I DO’S AND DONTS:
" DO REMEMBER TO TAKE BACK THOSE BOOKS YOU BOR I
ROWED, CHUM,'TAINT YOURS YOU KNOW..” 1
ON PREJUDICE
BY RUTH TAYLOR
Do you know the story of the
Southern judge who said he could
always tell the way a jury would
vote, provided he knew where lay
the preponderance of prejudice.
He knew his people. Too often
we make up our minds not ac
cording to the facts, even as we
know them, but according to our
prejudices, our instinctive likes
and dislikes.
I once knew a man who always
used to say—generally in the mid
st of my hectic argument—that a
woman's institutions were usually
her suspicions. I resented that.
Naturally. But I have to admit
that, if the wording is changed to
intuitions are usually suspicions,
the fact is correct.
We just don’t use our heads af
ter we get to arguing. We talk in
generalities, rather than on spe
cific cases. We say it is because
to be specific is to be rude. Is is
not. If you see something of which
you disapprove done by an indi
vidual, say so, but keep it to the
individual and don’t damn the
group from which he comes as
well. Don’t lump people into one
category. You wouldn't like it your
self.
Doesn’t it annoy you when any
one picks one man out of YOUR
group and says the whole group
or party or sect is crooked be
cause this or that one isn’t a plas
ter saint? You instinctively come
to his defense, in order to defend
your group. (And you usually
make matters worse by so doing,
Decontrol Board Urged To
Reestablish Price Controls
NEW YORK-(WDL,)—In a move
to pevent workers’ pay envelopes
from shrinking even further, the
Workers Defense League joined
labor and consumer organizations
in urging OPA’s price decontrol
board to reestablish price controls
on livestock, dairy products, cot
ton seed, grain and soybeans.
In a wire to Roy W. Thompson,
chairman of the board, Rev. Aron
S. Gilmartin, national WDL chair
man pointed out that the workers'
right to a living wage in buying
power must be safeguarded.
The latest WDL quarterly bul
letin calls upon the League's mem
bers to join local consumer and
labor organizations in the fight
against inflation and be active in
local buyers’ strikes.
because you make up in heat what
you lack in facts.)
And yet—don't you often do the
same thing?
Don’t let us be swayed by our
prejudices. Let us keep our own
thoughts clear and above such re
prehensible practices. And let's
not coin phrases. It isn't any bet
ter than coining money and usu
ally the product is just as false.
Now when, in the heat of poli
tical campaigns there is tensity of
feeling, let us then be especially
careful in this regard. We must
keep cool, stick to facts, and not
allow prejudice—which in reality
is lack of knowledge—rear its ugly
head among US. No man—no real
American—has a right to vote his
prejudices. WE must be for an
ideal not against an idea.
Britain Prepared To
Safeguard Suez Canal
NEW YORK-Soundphoto -Despite
withdrawal from Egypt, the British
have no intention of leaving the
vital Suez canal, the thin lifeline of
the Empire, without the protection
to which it has been accustomed.
This map, based on reports from
authentic sources, shows how Bri
tain is prepared to safeguard the
the canal. Now naval and air
bases are planned for Cyprus.
Tripoli, Haifa, Tobruk and Ben
gazi. The Tripoli and Haifa an
chors of the system would, in ad
dition, flank the important pipe
line to oil rich Iraq. Haifa is a
hotspot just now with the British
diverting thousands of refugee
Jews from that port to prepared
camps in Cyprus.

REPORTS FROM NEBRASKA
SAFETY PATROL
Captain C. J. Sanders, Nebraska
Safety Patrol, reports that as
•'Death” stepped on the gas in
July to make it the heaviest month
of the year in traffic fatalities
with 27, motorists too had stepped j
on the gas in July to make it the
highest month of 1946 in traffic
violations.
Captain Sanders’ monthly acti

that there were 860 motorists ar
rested for making dangerous viol

I in June. Heading the list of ar
rests were 168 drivers who mis
took the highways for speedways,
S6 who were too reckless, 75 who
didn’t believe in stop signs, and 52
who forgot that drinking and dri
ving dont mix. 262 motorists were
arrested for not having an opera-1
