ANTI POLL TAX BILL
Dear Friend:
Are we stopped at the last hurdle?
No!
Now is the time to get iln more and
many demands that H. R. 7, the anti
poll tax bill come to the Senate floor
this month. Senator Barkley, admin
istration leader who is primarily re
sponsible for planning the schedule,
continues to ignore H R 7. This can
be changed.
Last week Senator Karkley was for
ced to change his plans and allow the
anti-labor Case bill to come upf out of
turn. The poll-taxers, in a wave of an
ti-labor speeches, were largely resp
onsible. He should get just as much
pressure from within and without the
Senate to give H R 7 its long overdue
chance.
The summer recess is fast approa
ching. h R 7 must come up well be
fore that. It must come up before
Senators leave the city in large num
bers and while other important bills
are pending to serve as a brake on
the filibuster.
Will you mobilize support at this
time in your organization, in your
community. Send wires and letters to
Senator Alben Barkley and to your
own Senators, Senate Office Building,
"Washington 25, D. C., demanding act

these delaying tactics must be defeat
ed first.

powers.
A proper analysis wduld require
delving into many phases. Space lim
its full discussion on all; so permit
a suggestion to one group that it be
tolerant enough with another group
to permit it to advance two reasons
why:
First, the Imperialism of Great Bri
tain; Second, the philosophy of the
United States and the policy of its
armed forces in regards to white sup
remacy or discrimination.
Add to that the fact that the United
States’ delegate “climed the ladder of
success” on votes of less than ten per
cent of his States Citizens.
Does it require a great deal of in
telligence for one to reaon out why
Russia looks upon the U. S. delegate
with disdain, mistrust; Why she ques
tions the integrity of the other pow
ers,
Mr. Byrnes, as the U. S. delegate,
has two strikes on him before he
leaves American soil.

MEMORIAL DAY
We are approaching another Decor
ation Day and may pause and bow our
heads and lend a solemn thought to
loved ones that have crossed into the
great beyond. We all should take time
out and tenderly place a flower on
their last places. Some time or another
we must all pay this great debt. Let
us hope that we will not be forgotten.
President Lincoln said of the soldiers
“They did not die in vain". Remem
ber the boys who sacrificed their lives
in the turmoil of war that democracy
(night live. Some have received very
unfair treatment in return, but we
hope that by divine providence that
tins situation may be rectified in the
near future. Let us not forget!
US. Camp Kilmer, N. J., has been
overflowed with soldiers for overseas
and the War Dept. A large number of
them were sent to Camp Dix.
US Congressmen who favored the
FEPC bill made their final effort to
save it Wednesday, May 15. They have
hopes of a move to force it to the
floor. It has been stated by the Rules
Committee that they had had it stal
led.
The State of Texas started a state
wide clean up the week of May 13.
It was to stop another outbreak of
infantile paralysis.
Arab resistance to the Jews in Pal
estine is reported in London and a
general clash is expected from the
section of the Arab Association.
President Truman’s highway safety

A Jap that served 32 years in the

US Naval Committee have approved

John and Julius Schroeder living 18
miles south of Carroll, la., plowed a
pasture after it had been as such for
60 years to give the other land a rest.
Two men were sentenced to 30 days
in jail in Waterloo, la., May 14. They
were charged with taking liquor to an
Indian Reservation near Tarma, la.
An all woman jury tried a case in
Douglas County Criminal Court. It was
the first all woman jury in Douglas

Brown Bomber No Joke
Take it from humorist Joe Laurie,
Jr., Champion Joe Louis is not a man
io trifle with in a boxing ring. And:

Strictly in the interests of fistic re
search, Laurie served as a second
when die Brown Bomber boxed a few
rounds at his training camp at Pomp
ton Lakes, N. J., recently. The Champ
is preparing for his title bout with
Billy Conn in the Yankee Stadium
June 19th.
Laurie, who is heard on “Can You
Top This?” (NBC, Saturdays, 9:30
p. m. EDST) with Senator Ford and
Harry Hershfield, says he trained
three weeks in the Lambs Club, New
York, for his work-out as a second.
But because of his pint size, Laurie
says he really Ought to be called a
split-second.
As soon as Laurie arrived at the
camp gym. he donned sweatshirt No.
71, mainly for the benefit of the press
photographers. He had lots of fun
