COMPOSER-CONDUCTOR PHIL MOORE STRIKES OUT AT RACIAL .oi.iuMlI\ATION IN MUSIC NEW YORK—(Dix News Service ) Speaking before the Independent Cit izens Committee of the Arts Sciences and Professions in New York City here last week, Phil Moore, noted Ne gro composer, conductor and band leader, struck out boldly in defense of the Negroe’s rights in the musical pro fession. Speaking on the subject, “Discrim ination Against the Negro in -\Insic”. Moore spared no punches in bating that the few Negro groups which are hired steadily by radio stations across tfia country are not hired for their musicianship but bedause they “Uncle Tom”. Moore pointed out that in the New York territory only one Negro is working steadily for a picture studio, no more than two on sponsored Net work radio shows, and that there is not one Negro working with a major symphony orchestra. Moore hit forcefully at the nation’s ‘jim-crow’ musician’s union setup whe reby every union, except New York, will only admit musicians of one race. In almost every city in the country k 15 "e is both a white and a Negro union local. In New York there is one union for both races. “Conditions are different here’, Moore grinned, and then added, “That’s a joke son!” Phone us your SOCIAL NOTES "Next Door" By ted shearer li “Mr. Hubha. don’t you just love my new NYLONS?” A section of the 350 physicians and dentists who attended TAsM TOPICS By CHARLES ALLEN IV ( 1 I CO^TiMEKTAl.
