Eisenhower On Peace and Tolerance New York—Upon his return to the United States after glorious victory over Naz ieGrmany, Gener al of the Army, Dwight D. Eisen hower, began immediately to im press upon the people of America the necessity of making the hard won peace a lasting one. Coming directly from the battlefields of Europe, with memories of "grotes que shapes that are left there for burying squads”, with accurate knowledge what a future war may have in store for mankind, the Su preme Commander of the Allied Forces lost no time in stressing the necessity of active American partic ipation in making the future peace secure. Even before his arrival in the United States, speaking at a recep tion in his honor in London, Eisen hower solemnly declared: “My most cherished hope is that after Japan joins the Nazis in utter defeat, nei ther my own country' nor yours need ever again summon its sons and daughters from their peaceful pursuits to face the tragedies of, battle.” The Ameincan and the J British "common mdn” w-ent to W'arl to preserve his freedom of worship j his equality before the law. his lib- | erty to speak and to act as he sees j fit, subjcte only to provisions that' he trespasses not upon similar rights of others.”?Now, that the ! victory is partly won, the main task ahead is a permanent preserv ation of these rights in a peaceful cooperation among nations. I sit and watch it for a while And the sun keeps getting hotter. I watch my float with an eagle eye. It doesn't even quiver. I start to pull it out, and then, The dam things starts to shiver. It takes a sudden dip, or two, And then it takes a dive. I grab my pole with shaking hand*, That fish is sure alive. I finally jerk him out on land, And full upon my prize. He’s about six inches long, I guess, And not so much on size. I try again for an hour or two, And never get a bite. I’ve wasted lots of time and bait. I’m mad enough to fight. I’m kind of bashful about my fish, So when I start for home, I creep up all the alleys, For I wish to be alone. I know just what my pals would say. They’d kid me all the week, For catching that one mighty fish, And trying that homeward sneak. I guess I’ll try again tomorrow I hope for better luck. And if the same thing happens, Why my tail again I’ll tuck. —By Slick.
