After cod liver | oil and orange juice are intro | duced, then come the solid foods, 1 baby cereals, strained vegetables ind fruits. Usually a special baby cereal is the first of the supplementary foods. These cereals are available in pre-cooked form, with added vitamins and minerals which are needed in addition to those present l in milk. A cereal is usually start | ed at about 3 months of age, earlier if your doctor decides it. is hecessary. ' This first solid food is fed with a spoon so your baby will learn to eat and so he wilj learn to handle I ^olid food with his tongue. At first, ! dilute the cereal with enough milk 1 Dr formula so it is a creamy con i sistency. This is something en I tirely new to him, so give only a laste the first day or two. Later |t may be made thicker. After he has learned to eat cer* I eal, perhaps in a couple of weeksj one of the strained vegetables id introduced. It may be Carrots ol Spinach. For a few days, dilute the vegetable with some milk| After he has learned to eat ond vegetable, then give him another, feeding the same one for several days until it is familiar. During the next two or three months, gradually give a variety of vege* tables and fruits, all finely strain* ed as they come in the small cans or jars. I Be casual, matter-of-fact an4 enjoy feeding your baby, so that I he will associate happiness with bis mealtimes. Loose CvSifrtf, Too much sugar added to custards prevents them from thickening prop ! erly. fi3 AB Y„ By Lillian B. Storm$ S A young baby needs a drink of •water frequently. You may think that since his diet is mainly milk, he will have enough liquid. Or, you just may not think about giving him water. Boil fresh water, when preparing his breakfast, place in a covered sterilized bottle (or a fruit jar) •and serve it at room temperature. Ilf it is kept for more than half s day, it should be put in the re* frigerator, but bring it to room temperature before giving to the baby. Give water between meals. If he gets restless some time before the next meal, give him a drink of water. If it is almost meal time, give him only a small amount. Drinking of water offers you an opportunity to introduce your baby to a cup before he is ready to take orange juice or milk from a cup. At first you can give it in a bot* tie and the smaller size bottles are convenient. Then, when you think it possible and reasonable, give him some water in a spoon. When drinking water from a spoon gets to be routine, then graduate to a cup. Later when cereal is started, probably your doctor will advise a baby cereal during the third month, make it quite liquid and feed it from the now familiar spoon. Even after your baby t begins to have a varied diet of cereals, vege tables, fruits and custard, remem ber to give him a drink of water between each two meals. It is one of the good food habits you wil' >.«.>.
