'VACATION AT HOME V Bullet Is Removed From Heart of Girl PHILADELPHIA. — Ruth Sum mers. 16. was in an improved con dition recently after a .32 caliber bullet was removed from a heart muscle in a two-hour operation. Physicians said she had better than an even chance for recov ery. She was shot accidentally at the home of a friend while the two were examining a pistol. New ‘Chemical’ Torpedo Is Ruled a War Secret WASHINGTON, D. C.—Existence of a new, top-secret “chemical tor pedo” in the navy’s arsenal has been officially disclosed, but requests for further information on the weapon brought no information from the navy except that the subject is “se cret.” Such information as was released in congressional hearings gave no indication of the significance of the name “chemical.” Kaw (JaODage Raw cabbage is better known as a vitamin C rich food and for this reason it is placed with the tomato and citrus fruits in group two of the basic seven food chart. A serv ing of one-half to three-quarters cup of raw cabbage will furnish one quarter of the day’s need of vitamin C, providing certain precautions are taken. To capture these food values the cabbage must be garden fresh. It should be chopped in larger pieces than is customary for shredded cabbage, because finely cut cabbage exposes more of the surface to the air and vitamin C is decreased through oxidation. So, prepare cabbage to be used in salads as near serving time as possible, but if it must be cut in advance, keep the cabbage covered and stored in a cool place. And if the cabbage must be cooked, do it quickly. The best method of cooking to retain vitamin C is to steam the cabbage. Cook it uncovered in a small amount of water for five to seven minutes. Prolonged cooking in large amounts of water can cause as much as 95 j per cent destruction of vitamin C. Efficient Dressmaking Before pinning pattern pieces to a dress fabric, study the pattern thoroughly so there will be no mistake once the work is begun. Use a large surface for cutting. The kitchen table is usually adequate. Have pins in a convenient spot. A pincushion tied to the wrist is a handy device. Pin pattern together and try on, wrong side out. Adjust pins as necessary for proper fit. Baste as many seams as possible before stitching on the machine. Stitch as many “seams as possible on the machine at one time. Use hand sewing only when necessary. Use tailor’s chalk for marking pur poses—it is the quickest method for marking silk, rayon, cotton, linen or wool. Fire Loss For civilian real property in the United States, the fire loss rate, on the basis of underwriters' experi ence, is about $1.43 a year per $1,000 of valuation, compared with a rate of 31 cents at army installations. [ My first conclusion is that he is a terrible bore. He uses 10,000 words to say something that could easily be put in 500 words. * This is, in itself, bad economy. It is a waste of 9,500 words. I don’t see how anybody so wasteful can set himself up as an authority on economics. I haven’t finished his "Capital” but I have, already, the feeling that the man is far more inter ested in playing around with words than he is at solving any great human problems. Up to now, he reminds me of some of the dullest professors I had in college. And this is the father of mod ern economic monkey-business!
