How thick should the first solid
foods be ?
Usually the first solid food given
a baby is one of the special baby
cereals. These are thoroughly cook
ed and need only to have warm
milk or formula added. For the
first serving of a cereal, dilute it
with enough milk to give an almost
liquid consistency. It is thus more
nearly like the milk he has become
accustomed to.
After several feedings of very
thin cereal have been fed and
baby seems to be familiar with the
new food, gradually increase the
proportion of cereal and reduce the
milk, making it thicker.
Cereals are usually fed with a
spoon. If the spoon has been pre
viously used to give him water,
orange juice and cod liver oil, it is
no longer strange to him. #
Of course, it is easier to feed
thick cereal because it is less apt
to be spilled. The baby may blow
thin cereal out of the spoon either
intentionally or accidentally. Or
the spoon may be hit with a hand
which is aimlessly waving around,
or unconsciously he may be trying
to help to feed himself. Prepare for
spills, but don’t try to give him a
thick cereal at first. He has to
learn to eat solid foods by expe
rience.
The first strained vegetables may
be diluted with milk or formula.
A good rule to remember is that
you are not trying to make your
baby eat, you are letting him eat.
Remember, too, that. the first
year of life is full of new expe
riences and there are a multitude
of things to learn. Don’t try too
hard to teach him, let him learn.
Most From Soap
To get full cleaning power of soap,
use just enough and dissolve it thor
oughly. Mild soap is best for ordi
nary washing; stronger soap, for
very dirty or greasy clothes.
Strong soap or chemicals are hard
on both fabrics and washer.
Soap flakes, chips, beads and
powder save time by dissolving
quickly in water, but bar soap,
shaved or grated and then made
into a soap jelly with a little boil
ing water, may be cheaper. Whisk
the water about as the soap goes in,
to dissolve it completely before the
clothes go in. This prevents soap
spots on clothes. Use just enough
soap to make suds about two inches
thick. Too much or too little soap
does not wash satisfactorily. If the
suds thin out in washing, more soap
may be added.

THE RIGHT TO WALK OUT
What we Americans like and
want is the right to WALK OUT.
If we don’t like an employer,
we (in ordinary times) want the
.right to walk out and work for
somebody else or for ourselves.
If we don’t like our public ott
cials, we want the right to walk
out on them—vote them out of
office. v
If we don’t like our union, we
should, I believe, have a choice
of other unions—or no union.
If we don’t like an employee,
we should have the right to get
a better one.
There has been a gradual dis
appearance in America in recent
years of our freedom to WALK
OUT. "
