BUDDY JOHNSON’S ORCHESTRA WHAMMING 'EM ELLA JOHNSON BUDDY JOHNSON * ARTHUR PRYSOCK Exclusive to Ted Yates Publications One of the greatest bands right now is Buddy Johnson’s who with vocalists Ella Johnson and Arthur Prysock are scoring on a tour triumphant. A popular Oecca recording artist Johnson’s musical aggre gation is a favorite with the bobby-sock crowd. Small wonder when reports come from north, south, and west that Johnson is whamming ’em. P. S. That’s the coined phrase for “solid smash hit.” Incidently this orchestra is setting new attendance records on a tour through the South playing key southern cities after having already ben acclaimed “tops” on the west coast. ' ETHEL WATERS The "first lady of the blues” has just opened on Broadway in New York in a sensationally successful new variety show called “Blue Holi day.” In the cast with her and some 60 other headliners are Josh White, Willie Bryant, Katherine Dunham Dancers, the Hall Johnson Choir, Josephine Premice, Lillian Fitzgerald. The show is the first variety entertainment in keeping with the new eminence of Negroea Id the American theatre. LOCAL NEWS TWO OUTSTANDING GIRLS Norma Davis the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Davis of 2908 Erskine St., and Mil'icent Wheeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Earl Wheeler at 3011 North 28th avenue, were the two girls of the Howard Kennedy school who were chosen to attend a tea on May 20th The tea was given by the Omaha Business and Professional Women’s Club for the two outstanding girls of each school. Each girl was a warded a certificate in recognition of their outstanding progress and citizenship during their year in the eighth grade. Norma Davis was the third in her family chosen as the oustanding pupil of Howard Kennedy. Dolea and Raymond were chosen last year Mrs. Pickens of 809 North 24th Street has lived in this place for three years. Mrs. Pickens says that she likes the Guide very much and w-ill continue to read it and will always be a booster for the Guide. Mr. and Mrs. Samuels are the pleasant visitors of Rev. and Mrs. Adams, pastor of Paradise Baptist Church. Mr and Mrs. Samuels re ports that they enjoyed their stay in Omaha very much and that they like our city verv much. They are here from Chicago Mr. Samuels found many friends that made his stay a pleasure and hopes to return and meet the same friends He also admires the Omaha Guide. Mr and Mrs. Hall of 985 North 25th St., has a family of seven. Mr Hall is working at Swift and Com pany. Mrs Hall is kept busy with the kids. She says that sne doesn't have much time to spare. They are always on the move. Mr. John T Rose of 92S North 25th St., has been with the Street Car Co., for 24 years . Mr Rose has served the Company well and with honor. He admires his job and is still going strong Mr Rose says that he expects to take care of his job and that every colored man should do the same. He is now watchman for the company. Mrs. Washington of 210S North 27th avenue, departed uus life May 20th Mrs Washington was a mcm ber of Zion Baptist Church and was a devoted Christian She was loved by all who knew her and will be re membered by all of her friends and neighbors Mrs Carrie Washington of 5637 South 24th St., reports that her nephew will come home in the near future Mrs Washington also re ports that she attended Church on last Sunday and they had a real good service Mrs Washington says that her health is somewhat improved She is very proud of the Guide Mrs Wordena McShane just lert for Tulsa. It is sure a nice place to get your work done. It is known as the LUX. Mr B S. Sutton an old employe of the Guide reports that he still admires the Guide and shall always read it. The Guide is a wonderful paper He keeps the Guide in his home. Mrs Georgie Overstreet of 263S Z Street reports that her health is not so good at present She failed to go to church last Sunday because she did not feel so well Mrs Lou Giles of 2217 North 29tn St., seems to be on the move at all times and doing what she can for her neighbors I don’t know what we will do when Mrs Gil?s leaves this community.
