By Lillian B. Storms Your baby’s growth and develop ment depend first on what you eat during pregnancy and then on what you feed to your baby. We no long er think an expectant mother must “eat for two.” It is necessary to keep your weight from becoming excessive. The important matter is the quality or kind of food you eat. Milk is especially important in your diet at this time, mainly be cause of its calcium content. Cal cium is not found in any other food in large enough amounts to supply the minerals which are necessary for your baby’s skeleton, including not only bones but teeth. For the teeth are being formed during the period of gestation. But milk also has many other essential food val ues, excellent proteins for building body tissues, carbohydrates for energy, and some of the vitamins. These same values are the reasons milk forms the basis of the diet for growing children. The other needs for vitamins and minerals in your baby’s diet are supplied by vegetables and fruits in generous proportions, whole grain or enriched cereals (there are spe cial baby cereals) and then eggs and some meat in a vegetable soup. All of these-foods are gradually in troduced during the first year of your baby’s life. Your grandmothers used to be lieve that their own bodies suffered with every pregnancy and that the baby’s body took what it needed. Recent studies on large numbers of mothers and babies, where careful records on the diets eaten by the mothers have been kept, show that the baby suffers if the mother’s diet is not adequate. The records show superior babies when the mother’! diet has been carefully chosen. The replies, tabulated as a part of an extensive survey by the Imperial Furniture Company, showed that 49% selected the coffee table, I have been trying to analyse the reason for this popu larity. I feel it is because of the many ways in which the coffee table fits in to hospitable home living Its use as a coffee table— . for fashionably serving after dinner I coffee in the living room—is such j an easy, simple way to make a glamorous event out of a simple dinner party. It is just as appro priately used, too, for serving of cocktails before dinner. Because the coffee table is generally placed in front of the sofa, it is the log ical table to use every day for your favorite magazines, and for ashtrays, etc., to add to your com fort and relaxation. And don’t overlook the important decorative importance of the coffee table. When you have an especially im pressive bouquet or plant, a love ly vase, or prized collection pieces, show them off to best advantage on your coffee table. Ibis popularity of the coffee table is entirely a modern, Amer ican idea. The first coffee table— its low, convenient height, and spacious top size, were originated less than twenty years ago by Im perial, of Grand Rapids. And now, as this survey indicates, it has be come the most popular of all tables. Are You Embarrassed By HOT FLASHES?
