Private, business-managed utilities like Nebraska Power Company have shouldered a tremendous tax load in recent years, as Mr. Ely’s statement clearly indicates. The increasing Federal taxes they have been paying reflect the need of our government for funds to pay the mounting costs of war. Our Company’s recent tax history is a good example of the big part private electric utilities have taken toward paying those costs. In 1937, we paid a Federal tax bill of $477,249. For the year 1943, just six years later, that figure rose 107% to nearly one million dollars. And our total tax bill—local and Federal_paid in 1943, was nearly two million dollars. Nebraska Power is proud that with its business management and experienced employees it has been able to pay its full share of war costs, and at the same time, continue providing your de pendable electric service at the same low, pre-war rates. How the Farmers of Nebraska Will Suffer // Prohibition Returns The Brewing Industry of Nebraska is a definite aid to the farmers. It provides a market for their grains that the farmer can count on year after year. A return to Prohibition would deprive the farmer of this tremendous post-war market for his grains. For instance, in 1943, the Brewing Industry of America bought 13,643,696 bushels of Corn alone 1 In 1943, the Brewing Industry of America also bought 69,219,166 bushels of Barley. This huge market would be lost with the return of Prohibition. In addition, the more than $5,000,000 in taxes of all kinds paid to the state each year by the Brewing Industry of Nebraska, would have to be made up from some other form of taxation . . . and this increase in taxes would fall most heavily on the farmer. Storma If you’re having trouble with baby’s interest in food, you’ll be glad to hear about the two-cereal idea. It’s just about the smartest way I’ve heard of getting a baby to eat better—for babies like var iety too! It’s quite simple — use ready-to-serve strained oatmeal at one feeding, and cereal food at the next. Many doctors think this two cereal idea is so good they're tell ing Mothers about it! Strained oatmeal is a wheat - free cereal made from finely ground oat meal. It is enriched for extra nour ishment with both Iron, and Vita mins of the “B” Complex. It mixes to a creamy, smooth consistency when you add hot or cold milk or baby’s formula and serve. Then at the next feeding I sug gest you try giving your baby a specially prepared Cereal Food made of whole wheat, farina, and corn meal. It, too, can be obtain ed with Iron and Vitamins of the “B” Complex added. The Iron needs to be supplied to baby in greater quantities than present in any form of milk, and the Vitamins may make the differ ence between just “getting along” and having baby just full of pep and vitality! 0 0* \t 0~||T| 01 m ill ■ T im* RUT TOUR POULTRY AT THE NEBRASKA PRODUCE 2204-6 NORTH 24th ST. Here’s how it may help: 1 — Taken like a tonic, it should stimulate appe tite, aid digestion,• thus help build resist ance for the “time” to come. O m Started 3 days before _ “your time”, it should help relieve pain due to purely functional periodic causes. Try CarduL If it helps, you’ll be glad you did. CARDUI Editor, C.
