McCaw) NEW YORK— The smashing Re publican victory in Maine last week, is an accurate barometer of the tem perature of the rest of the country, editorial research reports show. Al though the state is a traditional Re publican bailiwick, the Maine vote over the last twenty years has accur ately shown the way the rest of the Nation would go whenever the Repub licau vote for Congress in September exceeded 60 percent. In these twen ty yars, whenever the Rpublicans went above 60 percent, they always followed through with a Republican Presidential victory in November. However, when the Republican vote for Congress in Maine dropped below 60 percent, the Democrats won the Presidential election in Novem ber. This happened in 1932, 1936 and ir. 1940, when Maine voted Re publican for Congress respectively 48. 51 and 59 percent, and Mr. Roose velt won the election in November. [PLAlNl | TALK..! BY DAN GARDNER “THE NEGRO DISILLUSIONED”. i The great liberals of the white South-Lillian Smith, Frank Graham, Virgmius Dabney, Mark Ethridge, Jonathan Daniels, Ralph Gill and others have a mighty task cut out for them in convincing the rest of their fellow whites that true dern j ocracv does not lie in subjugation of his black brother. They have a monumental job in changing whole viewpoints to raise the millions of Negroes throughout the South to a level where they are considered as and treated ljke men and women, e qual with the whites save for their color. This almost impossible task which the Smiths, Grahams, Dabneys, Eth ridges and others have asumed is made whit it is by the evil work of a comparative few whites who are thoroughly convinced that White Supremacy is the key to the white man's dominance of the world and} particularly of the Negro. AN ALTERNATIVE— LEAVE SOUTH. When millions of minds are sus sceptible to vicious, insidious anti Negro hate propaganda as are the average whites of the South, the situation appears hopeless and gives rise to suggestions that the Negro leave the South enmasse for other sections of the country where at least he might he regarded as a hu man being. The constant preaching of doctrines that portray the Negro as sub-human, as more or less a ward of the white man has its ef fect on every white man, regardless of his intellect or his understanding. “Birth -of a Nation”, "The Clans man” and other books and moving pictures perpetuating the theory of white supremacy have influenced millions in their attitude toward the Negro, thus making the position of the Smiths, the Grahams, Dabneys, Ethridges and Gills all the more dif ficult. As an example of this, I am quot ing from the latest diatribe that is designed to create more disunity, hatred and confusion among Amer ican people. Issued by the Crusader Publishing Co., at Childersburg, Al abama, the four page pamphlet is entitled, “The Negro Disillusioned” and is "By A Southern White Friend.” It has been reported that thous ands upon thousands of the pamph lets have been scattered through out the South. The result can be seen in the current yelps of the Negro haters. “Our Southern White Friend” writes “to open the eyes of the Ne BUY YOUR POULTRY AT THE ' NEBRASKA PRODUCE I 8204-6 NORTH 24th 8T. Of these 7,828, or 8.3%, figures made a vailahle by Investors Syndicate show, were built since January 1, 1930. "Post war home building and re modeling in these cities appears prom ising,” said Mr. Ryan. “Although these cities in 14 years have built 7, groes (and some white people) to the actual status of the Negro race in America; to acquaint them with that lace’s lack of intellectual back ground. and to pour oil on the troubl ed waters of racial discord—disturb ed by claims of equality that have no factual support and exist only as the hollow mockery of politics. ONLY NEGRO ASHAMED OF RACE .... “Of the five races with which the Earth is peopled,” says our Southern White Friend.” only one, the Negro is ashamed of hjs race and tries to be something oth'r than what GOD made him. Neither the Red, Yellow nor Brown races (want to be white, as the Negro ever -strives to become. Instead of having .that pride-of-race attached to the white, red, yellow and brown races, the black race is wholly lacking in that attribute: a shamed of his ancestry, and always trying to get as far from it as pos sible-deluding himself with claims of equality with the white race that are not borne out by his appearance, his present attainments nor his back ground in recorded history. The Ne gro attempts to conceal his identity by sidestepping his racial name, NE GRO, and classifying himself with the ‘colored’ races, red, yellow and brown, none of whom are Negroid racially; are distinct in racial type, and bear little resemblance to one an other. The Negro’s claim to kinship with them lies in the absurb logic that, since they are not white, and he is not white ; ergo, he is the same as they. “It continues our good Southern White Friend,’- as the Negro claims, his race is as good as the white race, why does he not content himself with Negro association ? Does not his preference for white associates prove his own claims to be ridiculous in the tyes of the other races ? If the Negro possesses all the intellectual, inventive and administrative abilities of the white race, why not prove his contention by establishing a govern ment cf, for and by Negroes and demonstrating his equality with the ruling races, white and yellow? Why such scant attention to that Negro proving ground, Liberia? Would ev en the Negroes, themselves, feel se cure with our coasts guarded by a fleet manned exclusively by Negroes; by a.i air force staffed and operated by Negroes; by an army composed wholly of Negroes? If not why not? DOES BANG UP JOB . Oar good “Southern White Friend has done a bang up job of spreading racial confusion, disunity and hatred with hsi, “The Negro Disillusioned" He builds up a lot of phony logic to support his premise that Negroes smellolike horses and camels; that the Negro’s best bet is to accept a sub-human status of non-citizen, ward-of-his-good Southern White Friends believe that Abe Lincoln com mitted a cardinal error in granting freedom to the slave, and to hope in some nebulous future when all the whites are in their grave as the test time for im to ask for the ballot and the chance to ride on a southern street car seated by a white person. For every good gesture or word be the great liberals of today—the Lil lian Smiths, the Dabneys, the Eth ridges, or the Gills, there is one vic ious, evil white man who ctn reach more “uninstructed-’ whites than they can. This is seen in “The Negro Disillusioned”. No telling how manv copies of this drivel have been distributed throughout the South. I got it through the mail. Mavbe a "•hole lot of white oeoole down South and elsewhere did also.
