The Up-to-Date Club had their
closing meeting last Friday, May 26,
1944 at the YWCA. The Club had
a big picnic at the “Y”, roasted wein
ers, played games and baseball and
closed their club with a successful

Monday evening at the beautiful
club rooms of the American Legion,
honoring all ladies whose birthdays

The purposes of USO are Author

es of America, by serving the relig

al needs of men and women of the
armed forces, and of workers of the
war industries; and
(2) . To contribute to the mainten
ance of the morale in communities.

on the work, and by the conditions
governing the need for it.
Effort is made by the 24th Street
USO to serve these great purposes

Grapefruit Meringue Pie

Grapefruit Meringue Pie
3 tablespoons
cornstarch
3 tablespoons
flour
1 cup sugar
Vi teaspoon salt
2cupa canned
unsweetened
grapefruit juice
2 egg yolks,
slightly beaten
Grated rind
and juice of
1 orange
1 baked Spry
Pie Shell
Combine cornstarch, flour, sugar,
and salt and mix. . . . Add Vz cup
grapefruit juice and mix. Add re
maining grapefruit juice and cook
until mixture begins to thicken;
place over boiling water and cook
until thick and smooth (15 min
utes), stirring occasionally. . . . Stir
a small amount of mixture into egg
yolks, return to double boiler, and
cook a few minutes longer. . . . Add
orange rind and juice and cool.
Pour into pie shell. . . . Top with
meringue made by beating 4 table
spoons sugar gradually into 2 stiff
ly beaten egg whites. . . . Bake in
alow oven (325° F.) 25 minutes.
Spry Pie Shell
Mix lt4 cups sifted ALL-PURPOSE
FLOUR and Vz teaspoon SALT.
Measure out 7 tablespoons SPRY
and divide into two equal parts.
STEP 1 for Tenderness—cut
in first half of Spry until aa
fine as meal.
STEP 2 for Plakiness—cut in
remaining Spry until par
ticles are size of large peas.
Add 3 tablespoons cold WATER,
mixing thoroughly into a dough.
Roll % inch thick and prick with
fork. Fit dough in pan and make
fluted rim. . . . Bake in very hot
oven (450° F.) 10 to 15 minutes.
