We are approaching one of the greatest days of the year and as we stop and think kindly and seriously of our special duty, we wonder if every I one will plan to do the great honor to the great heroes and our beloved ones who have crossed to the other side.... who fought and died that we might enjoy the freedom on this good old ship of earth ... for the time is not very far away for many of us when we will join them . and the ones who are left behind... will they think kindly of us in the same way? As we go about our duty Our Most Heavenly Father shall look down up on us with a smile and oh! may we always give praise as' it is through the Divine Mercies which we are per mitted to enjoy. We should always remember the Fatherhood of God and the ’ Brotherhood of mankind . we all know the very important part that our race has and is still giving to the service of their country.... in the Indian and Mexican wars, the Rev olutionary, Civil, Spanish American, the first world war and the second worlds war with all of its horrible procedures. We, as a race are fighting to elim inate the extreme discriminations which is against us and we do hope the day is not very far distant, when all the nation will think of what our good president, Abraham Lincoln once said “All men are created equal" and should be treated alike for the sake of God, Our Father and of man. Our Brother! McArthur Gets Appeal From NAACP On Death Sentences for Five New York—A stay of execution in the death senteices of four American Negro soldiers and one American Negro merchant seaman convicted in Australia on a charge of rape has been requested of General Douglas Mac Arthur by the NAACP. The cablegram, signed by Walter White, NAACP secretary, states: "National Association for Advance ment Colored People has been re quested by O'Sullivan and Ruddy, Solicitors, Brisbane and . Townsville to intervene with President in case of five men, Hazzard, Johnson, Sey mour, Nelson and Davis, convicted rape sentenced death. AG Washing ton advises you have full jurisdiction We ask stay execution pending op portunity inspect record now enroute and file appeal brief.” “Walter White.” The five men were convicted and sentenced to be hanged by general court-martial March 16-19, in Towns ville, Australia. They were charged with raping a white American Red Cross worker on the night of January 10, 1944. M. L. Williams of the firm of O Sullivan and Ruddy, Solicitors, was appointed civilian counsel for the mr; and on April 1 cabled the NAACP, asking it to intervene with President Roosevelt to secure a stay of the death sentence until an air mail letter explaining the case could arrive in America. The letter, mailed March 30, was received by the NAACP, May 18. The record of the trial, according to the summary contained in the let ter, shows htat at about 11:30 p.m. January 10, the Red Cross worker, who had been to a party and admit ted she was feeling "pretty good” be came angry with her party and start ed out to hitch hike home. The five colored men testified she waved down their truck and they took her in. She says she stopped when she saw the truck had Negro soldiers in it, and started to return in the dir ection from which she had come, but that one of the men jumped from the truck grabbed her and threatened to kill her if she did come quietly with them. Defense, counsel pointed out that the corner where she got into the truck was a prominent one, with ' considerable traffic and many resi dents nearby, and that if she had screamed she would have attracted instant attention and aid. She did not scream, according to her own Asks For Statement-He Save It GIVENOW ga 38 EAST 57th ST. HECBO NEWYORK 22. N.V. COLLEGE MflVlstto31st HIND Pistol Packin’ Mama Studies Mrs. Astor’s Plush Horse A political controversy was stirred up last week when Walter White, NAACP executive secretary, wired Gov. Dewey asking the probable Re publican presidential candidate to speak out in favor of the anti-poll tax bill before the senate. The New York governor replied, “I have al way fought against the poll tax and every other device to deprive free people of their vote!” White view ed the reply as “unsatisfactory” wir ing back, "To say one is against the poll tax but refrain from advocating specific steps to abolish it is not e i nough.” The NAACP official felt that a strong stand by Dewey sup porting cloture might have influenced the 23 uncommitted and opposing Re publican senatores to do likewise! A Dewey spokesman asserted, however, that "any statement he might make on that question might be interpreted as a bid for the presidency which Gov. Dewey apparently does not want to make, at this time.”. (ANP Photo) Robert M. Morgenthau, USNR., 24, of Hopewell, Junction, N. She says she was “a fraid”. The soldiers admitted having had relations with her, but testified she was willing and cooperative. She claims she was dragged from the truck, thrown to the ground and rap ed. Weakest point for the defendants, according to the letter, was the con flict between statements they signed a«d gave to Army officers, and their testimony later on the witness stand. The full names of the prisoners are George Hazzard. Charles E. Johnson Jr., George Seymour, Robert J. Kel son, and Wesley E. Davis. The Australian law firm is send ing a copy of the complete record ti the KAACP whose legal staff will study it and draw up an appeal brief which will be presented either to General MacArthur’s headquarters, or to President Roosevelt in the final review. NAVY IDENTIFIES NEGRO HERO OF LANS DALE SINKING (continued from p 1) the guns on the portside—and that's where Porter’s crew was—were al most in the water—that's the water off the table. But that’s the direct ion that Jerry plane took, so that gun was directed just off the top of the waves and kept firing until that bomber kissed the water for the last time. After that Porter and his crew went over the starboard side. “Over the starboard side,” he went on. “you see we had a terrific list to port and so we had to clamber down the starboard side. And don't let anybody ever claim the Mediterran ean is warm in April, the ‘warm' Mediterranean—ha! My teeth chat tered when my toes hit the first wave, and I’m not warm yet.” The Lansdale sank fast and those who were able to get away spent several hours in the water before they were rescued by a Coast Guard destroyer escort.
