BAD ECONOMIC CONDITIONS
CAUSE TUBERCULOSIS SAYS
NOTED SCIENTIST
Chicago, 111., May 18 (PPNS) —
Warning States and municipabties
that the high death rates of Negroes
from the tuberculosis plague can
only be reduced by improving social
and economic conditions of the Race,
Dr. Herman E. Hillboe, chief surgeon
of the tuberculosis control section of
the United States Public Health Ser
vice, quotes facts and figures. Ad
dressing the 40th annual meeting of
the national Tuberculosis Assoliation
at the Stevens Hotel here last week,
he stated the present death rate from
tuberculosis among Negroes is about
three and a half times that of whites.
To properly control this disease am
ong Negroes, he argued, we must
plan on the basis of death rates rath
er than population rates and “include
improvement of social and economic
conditions among Negroes.”
