strtute the Church Membership of
the future.
My judgement as to results is bas- j
ed upon the observation of the youth'
ranging in age from 12 to 18 m a
city community. During this period
of twenty-five to thirty years, there
was a minimum average attendance
1 of thirty in the Junior High and
thirty in the High School depart
ments, totalling some 1500 to 2000;
youths.
Upon observation, the members of I
this group who are active in any
Protestant Church as regular Church
attendants, financial supporters, of tic j
lal members, workers in the church !
school, to say nothing of the number
in full-time Christian service, are j
small in comparison to the number
who are members in good standing
of chibs and organizations devoted j
to selfish pleasures, indulging in the
accepted habits of the more worldly j
friends, smoking, drinking (tnoder- |
ately maybe), amusements such as I
minor gambling, swearing, telling!
and acting untruths, knowing that It!
is not right or Christian, but choos- j
ing to take the easy way and not to!
appear odd or different.
Why do the large majority of
youth decide to talk and act the same j
as youth ho have made no profes-1
sion of being Christians, such as af-l
fecting an attitude of insincerity, be-!
mg snobbish towards those not in!
their group, choosing to not sing!
Christian hymns, cheating in school
tests, being unkindly m attitude to-,
wards backward races and national
ities, accepting the idea of doing
whatever they can get by with, with
no evident desire to ant to know how
they can be a more ef fective growing
Christian ?
My observation over these years is
that the larger number are not mak
ing an effort by frequent contacts
with Christ in reading Christian lit
erature, or even listening to the mes
sage from thera dio, to improve their
Christian character that they may be
come more unselfish, more kind to
the unfortunate and the socially
handicapped. more forgiving with a
real desire or world-wide brother-:
hood.
I have talked with workers in oth- !
er schools of various denominations I
and they seem to have the same prob
iems and experiences. I f this is true ’
then there must be something lacking
in our materials, methods or person- j
nel.
The usual reply is that it is due
to the influence of the home, the j
school and our present social-recre
ational life, coupled with the fact
that we have them for such a short:
period of time. However, we are
still faced with _ the question: Are we

Does the Christian way of life
mean more to us than food, clothes
and the possession of things ? Are
we working with God to make His
Kingdom a real practical way of liie
on earth?
The current idea that the boys in
the present war will come back with
a new determination to live a vital
Christian life based on the oft-repeat
ed statement, “That there are no
Atheists in the fox-holes", I think,
is entirely erroneous.
It will, in most instances, take
more than a belief in a supreme be
ing, who will by some superhuman
means protect their lives, to bring a
bout a growing sense of the presence
of God in their daily thinking and
living. If personal hate is the basis
for their courage, the damage done
to their higher and better motives
will stunt their spiritual growth for
years to come.

Let us face the following questions
honestly:
X. What can we do to improve the
product oi our schools?
2. Have we been teaching just a
highly perfected lesson material?
3. Do we honestly evaluate our re
sults ?
4. Have we inocrporated Ch?ist
into our own lives and teachings?
5. Have we eliminated the emot
ional element to a fault?
6. Do we meet often enough as a
group to improve our work?
T. Is more leadership training the
solution ?
8. Does the Pastoral Leadership
influence the result?
9. Can we improve our results In

10. Should we face these problems
on a Denominational or Interdenom

Has the Christian message as
brought to us in the Bible been a
separate part of cur lives that it has
no practical bearing on our daily liv
ing? Are we using the best methods
to obtain an honest, definite decision
cm the part of our youth to do thej
will of God? as revealed to them
through their conscience and the j
teachings and the life of Christ.
One Christian mother made the
statement that in a group of women
of her age, who were all the product
of our churches and church schools,
she was the only one who did not
smoke and drink. Did they all have
the same high ideals of Christian
character when they accepted Christ
into their life and joined the church,
or did we fail to make it truly a
Christ-motivated life?
Is there something lacking in the
virility of our presentation of the
Christian way of life that boys gen
erally think it is more manly to act
tough, browbeat and push around the
weaker or less fortunate, do what
other boys do though they know it
