More than ten thousand Negro Sea Bees are among the members of this amazing group of fight ing construction men who have played an all-important role on every battle-front of the world —from the first skirmishes at Guadalcanal to the vicious war fare now being waged on the rocky terrain in Italy. For rea sons of military security, the en tire story cannot be told; but two Negro Battalions are now over seas, and many men are being readied to go. No task is impossible to the SeaBees, who put the finishing touches on Henderson Field while Jap planes unloaded their bombs and flailed them with machine-gun fire, laid corduroy roads for supplies and guns at Rendova while the enemy laid down a blistering artillery bar rage, built airfields, docks, fuel tanks and warehouses in the Ale utians in the teeth of ‘williwaws,’ gales reaching a hundred miles an hour, and have been in the thick of amphibious action in many battle areas. SoaBees Organized After Wake liland The need for such an organi zation was brought home to the Navy by the painful tragedy at Wake Island. Thousands of civil ians had been at work there, and at Pearl Harbor and Midway, building Naval installations and air bases for future use. Then came the cowardly attack on the islands; and the builders, a3 civilians, could not be armed. Unable to defend themselves, many were captured and others killed.
