THE NINTH COMMANDMENT
(by Ruth Taylor)
“ hi vain we call old notions fudge,
And V nd our conscience to oar dealing,
The Ten Commandments will not budge,
And stealing will continue stealing.”
James Russell Lowell
“Thou shalt not bear false witness against Thy
neighbor” is still one of the Ten Commandments.
No doubt nine out of ten people questioned would
say that that is one sin they never commit. But, try
listening to any conversation, even jmur own—and
see how carelessly, how habitually the Ninth Com
mandment is broken.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you judge him not as an individual upon his
own merits, but as a part of a group—whether that
judgement be praise or censure.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you impute to him motives for action about
which you can know nothing.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you accuse him of acting only in his own self
interest.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you pass on unconfirmed) rumors about him or
the group from which he comes, or when you shade
the truth or supply details from your own imagin
ation to make a good story.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you pre-judge him, when you assume the
worst and determine what he will do before he has
done it.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you attribute to him lower aims than your
aims, lower ideals than your ideals.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you think of him as un-American just because
his background is different than yours, his family
has come from a different nation or because he goes
to a different church.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you refuse to grant him the same privileges
you reserve to yourself.
You bear false witness against your neighbor
when you bar the gates to understanding, for by so
doing you deny the Fatherhood of God and the Bro
therhood of ali men.
Do you keep the Ninth Commandment1?
DO NOT SPIT ON SIDEWALKS
CAMPAIGN GETS UNDERWAY
In a five weeks’ campaign launch
ed last Monday, a committee of Om
aha men will seek to enlist the aid of
everyone in the city to stop the care
less practice of spitting on sidewalks
and crosswalks.
Support for the campaign has been
pledge by city and county officials,
city health department, Douglas coun
ty Medical Society, newspapers and
radio stations to impress on everyone
the danger to health resulting from
the ugly practice of promiscuous spit
ting.
Police Commissioner Richard Jep
sen will make the first radio ann
ouncement of the campaign over WO
W at 5:00 pm. Saturday. His talk
will be rebroadcast by transcription
: over KOIL, KOWH, and KBON la
ter.
Window cards will be distributed
by Boy Scouts to all downtown stor
es and posters will be displayed for
several days at the start of the cam
paign on the street cars. Industrial
plan's and large offices will be asked
to call attention to the anti-spitting
campaign on their bulletin boards.
Civic, business and professional or
gaizations and women's clubs are be
ing asked to cooperate. A letter to
these organizations from the comm
ittee in charge calls attention to the
unusual amount of spittle on Omahas
sidewalks, particularly in the down
town area. The committee requests
their help in "bringing home to the
people of Omaha the unhealthy re
sults of this careless practice.”
Dr. H. B. Kennedy is committee
chairman and Raymond E. McGrath,
co-chairman. Committee members
include Dr. Ernest L. MacQuiddy
Harvey E. Milliken, Russell Harris,
James H. Robinson and Horce I..
Rosenblum.
“Our committee started this educa-!
tional campaign as the result of ob
servations of its members following
receipt of frequent criticism of Om
aha’s unclean sidewalks voiced hv res
idents and visitors, Dr. H. B. Kenn
edy said. "There is a city health or
dinance which provides penalty for
its violation, but we do not think it
is necessary to invoke drastic enforce
ment campaign with arrests and fines
of violators. Most persons who spit
on the sidewalks do so thoughtlessly.
We feel confident that when they are
made aware of its dangers to health j
and that it is an infringement of
good manners, they will stop spitting
on the sidewalks.”
In its campaign, the committee will
emphasize that contagious disease
germs in sputum can be carried into
the homes by clinging to shoes or
clothing, and that contagion and ill
ness can be spread by this germ-lad
en sputum carried on dust particles
into the air.
Sidewalks littered with spit also
are a mark of careless housekeeping
and create an extremely unfavorable
impression on visitors to Omaha.
Much of the criticism heard by the
committee sponsoring the campaign
has been visitors to the city, Dr. Ken
nedy said.
