The WAITERS’ COLUMN By H. W. Smith WE. 6458 Capt. Earl Jones and Mr. Frank Buford on 24th and Lake street Sun day afternoon, April 16th. It is rumored that Dave Morrison will make the Ky. Derby before re turning to Omaha. The Blackstone hotel waiters are topnutchers on fine service. The Paxton hotel waiters are in the running on fine service at all times. . < The RR boys are serving on the steel wheels with a smile. I The waiters at the Hill hotel are always out in front. The Regis hotel and the White Horse Inn waiters are on the up and go at all times. Mr. Johnnie Malloy and Mr. Earl Copeland and Mr. Joe Brown are top notchers at the cocktail louige at the Athletic club. The summer clubs are on the way to opening and the boys will soon be enjoying the odor of the green trees. THE WEEK. U. S. Senator Ferguson has been conducting a preliminary investigation on the shortages of paper. An airplane appeared over the Smith college in Northhampton Mass on Friday April 14th. A tiny para chute dropped a note and a bar of candy. The note read, ‘Pilot sends ove, co-pilot sends candy.’ Anti poll tax bill was to be up on April 17th. Sgt. Charles E. Murray brought greet ings from the U. S. Maritime Comm ission John S. Sengestacke, president and j general manager of The Chicago De-' fender, accepted the presentation and paid a glowing tribute to the memory of Mr. Abbott, his uncle. Mr. Senge stacke characterized the occasion as historical in that it marked the first time that a ship named to commem orate the memory of a distinguished Negro is being financed completely by Negro citizens through the pur chase of war bonis and stamps. The citizens of Illinois in a special war bond campaign have set $3,000,000 as their goal to pay for the SS ROB ERT S. ABBOTT. Other Liberty Ships built by the Permanente Metals Corporation and named for Negroes have been the SS George Washington, the John Hope, and Toussaint L’Ouverture. Thirteen Liberty Ships have been named for Negroes by the Maritime Commission. A destroyer escort was named by the Navy for Leonard Roy Harmon, who was awarded the Navy Cross posthumorously, for heroic conduct at Guaducanal.
