IN BARRING OF RANDOLPH
FROM MEMPHIS
Washington, DC.—Secretary of
State Cordell Hull has been asked
(to use his influence” as one cf
the most distinguished citizens of
Tennessee” in the matter of the
denial of free speech in the city of
Memphis to A. Philip Randolph,
president of the Brotherhood of
Sleeping Car porters.
Mr. Randolph was scheduled to
speak in Memphis November 7,
but on November 6 Sheriff O. H.
Perry sent deputy sheriffs to the
homes of fiteen leading- Negro cit
izens ordering them to appear in
the Sheriff’s office at three o'clock
that day. When they assembled
ihe told them bluntly that Randolph
would not be permitted to speak
and that the meeting must be can
celled. The meeting was cancelled.
The NAACP, which mad the ap
peal to Secretary Hull wrote:

prising that he answers a letter on
the anti-poll tax bill and drags in
to it the statement: "I do not en
tertain Negroes.”
Miss Mary W. Francis of New
York City, who happens to be
white wrote Senator Bilbo protest
ing against the announced filibus
ter on the anti-poll tax bill. In
the course of her letter she men
tioned that she had several relat
ives in Mississippi.
In reply, Senator Bilbo stated
that the only way to prevent a fil
ibuster would be to get he suppor
ters of the anti-poll tax bill to
withdraw it. He named Lee Press
man, chief attorney for the CIO:
William Green, president of the
AFL; Senators Mead and Wagn-.r
of New York, Pepper of Florida,
T ucas of Illinois, and VanNuys of
Indiana; Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt;
and Walter White of the NAACP.

tnereby lead to mongrelizing and
contamination of the best blood on
earth.”
