were the committee in Charge of

rovia and is one of the illustrations in the new book “Top Hats
and Tom-Toms” by Elizabeth Dearmin Furbay, just published by
the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company. “Top Hats and Tom-Toms”
—a lively, informative, and brilliantly detailed picture of the col
orful Republc of Liberia—goes a long way toward dispeling the
obscurity of this ittle African Negro country. The author draws
on a wealth of knowledge acquired during three years residence
in Monrovia, the capital, where her husband, Doctor John Harvi y
Furbay, served as head of the College of West Africa.
From the sorcery of the jungle to the sophistication of the met
ropolis, TOP HATS AND TOM-TOMS, by Elizabeth Dearmin Furbay, is
the colorful, informative picture of life among the aristocratic descend
ents of the American Negroes, who rule the Republic of L beria, a re
mote little country situated on the
“Grain" coast of Africa.
For three years Mrs. Fu'rbay liv
ed in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital,
where her husband seved as head
of the College of West Africa, and
where she came in close contact
with every class of resident, from
top government official to bllsh
native cannibal. Because of the
proximity of the Hinterland- -the
bush country, inhabited by tribal
peoples, Mrs. Furbay was able to
father some fascinating materal
about the Ju-Ju, the Devil Bush,
and the incantations of the witch
doctor, which, as she so aptly des
cribes it, “sway the top-hatted ar
istocrat as well as the native.”
The unmorali^ of the Liberians,
as related by Mrs. Fu'rbay, is am
azing. While accepting the social
formalties common to Occidental
countries, marital customs hav 1
been revolutionized. Daughters of
the so-cauea ‘‘four hundred”, who
have strayed from the beaten path,
cause not even a raised eyebrow.
