New York Show Front BY DON DeLEIGHBUR NEW YORK.At the height of the rioting in Detroit, a Copper-1 colored boy with a pronouncedly Irish beauty, long auburn hair, trim figure, legs, and blue eyes, was standing at the corner of 43rd Street and Broadway in the heart of downtown Gotham kissing one another goodbye. Traffic was snarled. People on their way back to work from lunch made th6mselve» late watching. Automobiles slowed down to a snail’s pace as the drivers peeked, and peeked and pondere. And the coppo--colored soldier boy and the Irish beauty didn’t make it one kiss in this broad daylight example of love across the line. Every time, it seems, that the soldier started off toward the sub way, the girl would run after him and embrace him again. •The whites moved nearer, hop ing against hope to hear the Color ed soldier speak Russian, Checho slovakian, pig-Latin, Bulgarian, Spanish or something to take him out of the classification of being an American Negro, But no dice. The boy was talking cultivated English and so was the girl.Riot talk in Harlem has fallen off to the us ual protest against conditions in the South and elsewhere, but on the days the .riot was at its peak in Detroit, a policeman told me that lie had heard that Negroes.' had picked special windows with shoes .dresses, suits, jewelry, haras ana turkeys, suitcases and the tilings folks want the most and were ready, the policeman laugh ingly said, to "get straight" in front if any booting and shooting broke out. ***** One of the belter small comWn the one headed by Prank Newton ations on the New York front is at> Cafe Society, Downtown, Fran k'e a trumpeter from way back, hos such men in his outfit an Ed die Iiarefie'.d and •'Ram'’ liamirez ami Vic Dickerson_..Madeline Gi een, the Song sor: v ‘-s who with p;l:.v Ekstein, he’p&d to revive the Ear; Hines orchestn, is not with n Patha’ nor ..she unit, tic save lx cause of the stress and strain i the road and is back in, Harlem for a rest a::i f it a nL\v re;iu:ajre before gcirg for h-.r:;« .f as a single... .Maieiino, a stunn ing brown, tall and ravishingiy beautiful, is working on an idea of using two pianos as accompani ment with the pianists, (if they are men) attired in black and white formal dress and she singing be tween the pianos like Adelaide Hall used to do....It would be a novelty, but where can she get the male box beaters, what with Uncle grabbing all in sght?! ***** The William Morris Agency has finally signed up Zutty Singleton, prominent drum special in New York for the last 12 years, who is now in Hollywood at the new Club Trinidad.... Zutty, who camp out of New Orleans around 1920 with Louis Armstrong and other top flight boys from the “Algiers” sec ; tion, is considered the world’s greatest swing drummer and as such won honors at Yale and Har vard Universities, and crashed ex clusive social circles in the Mayfair district because of his almost humble approach to his work_.. STANLEY JONES EXPOUNDS NON-VIOLENT TECHNIQUE AT MO\VM CONFERENCE New York City, July 11_Tn the Chicago Conference of “WE ARE AMERICANS, TOO’’ sponsored by the March On Washington Move ment, E .Stanley Jones world re nown missionary in one of the major addresses before the confer ence at the DuSable High School made an eloquent, illuminating and stirring exposition of the technique of Non-Violent Goodwill Direct Ac tion as a method of attacking jim crow in America. The outstand ing emphasis of his talk was that those who take up this principle of social action must be prepared to evince the capacity to suffer in a comparable manner with the Cap acity of the enemies’ to inflict suf fering. He pointed out that the way to peace and goodwill was a way of non-violent direct action and that the way of violence and boodshed could only lead to more violence and bloodshed, confusion, ill-will and social chaos. His talk was greeted with a tre mendous ovation from the huge audience which packed the DuSable iHgh school. Dr. Jones came all the way from Mexico to address the meeting. Mr. Randolph gave the other principle address in which he dealt with the program of the March on Washington Movement stressing the need for action in the Negro liberation movement. Haas Reports WASHINGTON, July 12 (ANP>— Besides eliminating axis agents and the Ku Klux Klan as the pro vocateurs in the Detroit riotings, Msgr. Francis J. Haas, chairman of the Fair Employment Practice committee, had a good deal to say about the causes of rioting, and actually gave indication that the committee might conceivably at tempt to reach out and do some thing about it. At least, this thought is gaining currency. “There are several things which stand out like sore thumbs in the press conference Fr. Haas held last week which might give validity to this thinking. In his prepared statement, the chairman said: “The objective let the committee) is to further the pro secution of the war, worker mor ale, and national unity.” Further down he adds: “The committee is conscious that this sound objective must be pursued where wartime crowding in houses, buses and re creation grounds have bred irrita tion among decent people-._..” When asked directly, Fr. Haas said that the observation of Con ditions in Detroit was one of the primary purposes of his visit, and that he planned to prepare a mem orandum on his findings. The question as to whom the memor andum would be for brought only a nudge from an assistant. He reiterated his belief that “housing, recreation and city transportation’ are basic causes for friction, and that “a recurrence of the tragedy can be prevented if the underlying causes are elimin ated.’’ At another point in the confer ence, the chairman said he might make recommendations to certain agencies on his observations. Con sidering the causes as he defines them, the chairman would most logically make his suggestions to the National Housing agency, the Federal Works agency and the Office for Defense Transportation. President Roosevelt has been rep resented at various tims as being interested in channeling all prob lems arising with regard to Negro es through one agency or bureau. He has not gotten around to any plan for doing so, as far as could be determined. The implications in the Haas statements might add up to an effort now to gradually put into operation such a thought.
