NY PHILHARMONIC SYMPHONY | GIVES NEGROID WORK FIRST PERFORM ANCE (BY CARL DITON) New York, April 2 (ANP) In ac cordance with its policy to en courage musical composition in the Negro vein, the New Yoi£ Phil harmonic Symphony offered Sun day afternoon a first performano of “Batuque” from the “Reisado de Pastoreio’ ’suite of the talented Brazilian composer, Oscar Loren zo Fernandez. This constructive work of no mean importance since serious, Negroid musical creation, we hope, has in no wise reached its ciumination in development, a fact that should be of great com fort to interested composers, es pecially those of Negro descent. There is not much that can be said of the work except that the composer has approached his task with seriousness. It had, of nec essity, to be brief in order to suc cessfully portray what was orig inally and African dance calling forth the utmost exertion of body and feet, reaching at times to the point of violence. There was not ably a pretty little motive savor ing much of the ancient Greek scale which the composer used fre quently a la “estinate.” BOWELS SLUGGISH? • F«ljn« like you lost your best friend — htadachy-dull-all because of slugRish bow els.
