WILBERFORCE ASKS FOR A MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET D It was revealed early last week that Dr. Charles H. Wesley, presi den tof Wilberforce University, has asked the Ohio State Legislat ure for a budget of $1,190,861 for the year 1943, a portion of whi.-h is ear marked for post war build ing construction, and the larger portion for maintenance and im provement of the present plant and personnel. President Wesley, Superintend ent, C. C. Jenkins, and Attorney Ray Hughes, chairman o fthe state board of trustees, will appear be fore the finance committee of the legislature to press for the pass age of this budget. Dr. DeWitt Turpeau (a member of this finance committee), Dr. Sandy Ray, and Attorney Chester Gilllspie, the three Negro members of the Ohio legislature, are also actively inter ested in getting this appropriation through. The interest and sup port of Governor John Bricker is also being sought. WESLEY ADDRESSES OHIO LEGISLATURE For the first time a Negro edu cator was invited to deliver an ad dress before the session of an O-, hio legislature. President Wes-ey addressed the Ohio State legislat ure on Wednesday, March 3, at 1 p .m. PIONEER NEWSPAPER MAN DIES AT 83 New York, March 2 (ANP Jerome Bowers Peterson, 83, pio neer news paper editor and co founder of the New York Age died Friday in Brooklyn after a stroke. Funeral services were held Mon day afternoon at his late residence in Brooklyn at St. Phillip's Epis copal Church. Mr. Peterson held several out standing positions. In 1904 he was appointed U. S. Consul to Puerto Catello, Venezuela, for a year. He afterwords worked in the internal revenue bureau as deputy collector of internal revenue until 1916. La ter, he did special w-ork for the treasury department and then re turned to the internal revenue bur eau where he was employed until his etirement in 1933.
