COMMUNITY SHOCKED OVER

MRS. ELLA HARPER
Community was shocked beyond
expression Thursday afternoon.
January 21st when news flashed
over the city by phone and radio
of the tragic burning of Mrs. Ella
Harper, 78 years old. of 2220 Wil
lis Ave., her home, in her rodm
by some mysterious way Mrs. El
la Harper caught on fire from a
gas heater presumably her dress
caught on fire. She could not
summon help. In the meantime
her devoted niece Mrs. Mary Gan?
smelled Something burning from
her upstairs room, and rushing
downstairs from her upstairs
room, found the fire and beat it
out- Called the doctor ar*d the
fire department. Both rushed to
the scene finding Mrs, Harper on
her knees by her bed still con
scious. They rushed her to the
Doctors hospital, where she suc
cumbed at 6:45 p. m.
Funeral services were held on
Monday 2 p. m. from the St. Johns
AME. Church. Rev. Ridley .pas
tor, officiating.
Mrs Harper was an old member1
of the church. She had lived in
Omaha more than 65 years, com
ing here as a girl from Platte city
Missouri.
Survivors a sister Mrs. Louise
Strawthers, niece Mrs. Mary Gant,
nephew Mr. Elmer Gant, two a
dopted children and several cous
ins and literally hundreds of
friends- All loved her as was at
tested by the beautiful profuse
floral offerings. Lewis Mortuary

The court found the differential
between Negro and white Salaries
was approximately at the ratio of
3 to 2. The court found also that
this discrimination was absed sole
ly' upon srace and color.
Regarding the evidence of var
iable salary schedules the court
siad: ' It disclosed without any sub
stantial conflict that in every in
stance where special treatment
was given to a white teacher or
principal on account of his or her
personal qualifications, such prin
cipal or teacher received favorable
treatment in the way of increased
compensation, while in no instance
had such favorable treatment been
accorded to a colored principal or
teacher on account of his or her
special personal qualifiations. Un
der these circumstances the Court
does not feel justified in approv
ing in its decree the variable sch
