lines. The southwest Power Pool
took over the entire load of the al
uminum plant and furnished all of
the power requirements of the al
uminum plant for 85 hours, untd
the transmission line was repaired.
When the aluminum plant wij
first built, the federal government
bureaus that were interested werd
advised that the power companies
of the Southwest Power Pool had
Plenty of electricity to meet all of
the i>ower requirements of the al
uminum plant. They advised the
federal officials that there was ur
need for the federal government to
turn over nearly four million dol
lars of taxpayer's money to the
REA. sponsor'd Ark-La Electric
Cooperative and also that ^here wa-j
no need to waste millions of pounds
of vital copper and other metals fo»
government-financed transmission
lines paralleling existing facilities.
In the recent transmission break
I down .had it not been for the tram
mission lines o fthe business-man
aged Power Pool, the aluminum
plant would have had to close down
part of its operation for several
days which would have meant a de
lay and the loss of over 100 tons of
v’tal aluminum. This would have
been enough aluminum to build
scores of bombers and other vital
war materials.

mine in the South Pacific, only four men of the estimated four thousand troops aboard the transport
were lost, thanks to the efficient rescue operations of the Navy’s accompanying craft. The liner was
apparently enroute to American South Pacific bases with men and equipment when she hit the mine.
